How The Boys Season 5 Convinced Daveed Diggs To Break His Musical Rejection Streak After Hamilton

Beware, major spoilers ahead for The Boys season 5, episode 7! The show has unexpectedly returned one of its actors to the world of music.

Daveed Diggs, known for his Tony and Grammy-winning performance in Hamilton, hadn’t taken on many musical roles since then. He recently shared that his work on season 5 of The Boys changed his mind. Diggs, who plays Oh Father, found himself rehearsing a musical number in episode 7, marking a return to his musical roots.

I was so fascinated to hear that The Boys actually got Anthony Starr to consider doing a musical number again! Apparently, after Hamilton, he’d been getting asked to sing in roles, but he’d been saying no across the board. He told ScreenRant that he really loved his time on The Boys and the show’s music team was so good, it finally made him want to do it. It’s awesome to see him embrace that side of things again, and I’m really excited to see what they come up with!

Finally, your performance of the ‘Homelander Jesus’ song was amazing! Will it be available to listen to on Spotify?

Daveed Diggs said he’s open to returning, as the show’s creators asked him to appear a few episodes into the season. He usually declines guest roles on other shows, but he was impressed with the music team on this one. He enjoyed the show and had faith in their vision, and he’s glad he said yes – it was a really fun experience.

Since his time in Hamilton, Diggs has continued to work on musical projects like voicing Sebastian in the live-action The Little Mermaid and playing Spruce in Trolls Band Together. However, most of his recent roles have been non-musical, appearing in both movies and TV shows. While he’s done some voice work and live-action roles for television, none of them required him to sing until the second-to-last episode of The Boys season 5.

Stevie Diggs’ musical performance wasn’t just entertaining—it actually moved the plot forward in the episode. The routine is being used to build hype around Homelander’s claim to be a god, making the public believe he truly is divine. Though the other characters recognize it’s fueled by Homelander’s pride, Oh Father sincerely believes Homelander can bring people together, which is why he so strongly supports this grand spectacle.

It’s really striking to see how much this performance changes when you consider what happens later in the episode. Seeing him forced to let those focus group members be killed by Dogknott and Sheline, all because they didn’t believe Homelander was a god… it just adds so much weight to the musical number. When it’s performed for the public, meant to convince everyone Homelander is a god, I don’t think ‘Oh Father’ feels the same way about it anymore. He seemed so sure when he first sang it, but now… it’s different.

The musical number featuring Diggs was rare for him, and it played a key role in the episode – removing it would have diminished the impact. Now that The Boys is nearing its conclusion, it’s unclear if the performance by ‘Oh Father’ will become relevant again as the story unfolds in the later episodes of season 5, particularly after the events of episode 7.
