Pride and Prejudice series in the works at Netflix

As a lifelong fan of Jane Austen’s works and someone who has lost countless hours to the 1995 BBC Pride and Prejudice miniseries (Colin Firth’s wet shirt scene, anyone?), I must say that Netflix’s reported adaptation of this timeless classic fills me with a mix of excitement and trepidation.

A new Pride and Prejudice series is reportedly in development at Netflix.

Based on reports from Variety, it’s been announced that the classic novel by Jane Austen is set to be reimagined for a popular streaming platform. The script is currently being penned by the talented author Dolly Alderton, known for her work “Everything I Know About Love.

The project is still being developed, and it has not received approval (greenlight) from Netflix as of now; there are no actors associated with it at this stage.

Austen’s 1813 romantic novel has undergone numerous screen adaptations throughout the years, one notable version being the 2005 film featuring Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen, who is also known for his role in ‘Succession’.

10 years ago, the BBC was able to attract a massive viewership with their 1995 television mini-series, starring Colin Firth as Mr. Darcy and Jennifer Ehle as Elizabeth Bennet.

The story primarily revolves around the eldest Bennett sister, Elizabeth, who crosses paths with a wealthy nobleman called Fitzwilliam Darcy. However, neither of them experience immediate feelings of affection towards each other at their initial meeting.

Over the course of time, the two main characters keep running into each other, eventually learning to set aside their past arrogance and biases to embrace a genuine love for one another.

In the past, Netflix has revisited a timeless Jane Austen masterpiece, and in 2022, they’re bringing her 1817 novel “Persuasion” to life on screen, featuring Dakota Johnson, who is known for her roles in “Madame Web” and “Fifty Shades of Grey.

A new TV series based on Jane Austen’s novel “Pride and Prejudice” will be Dolly Alderton’s second screenplay, following her adaptation of her 2018 memoir titled “Everything I Know About Love.” This miniseries, which premiered in 2022, featured Bel Powley and Emma Appleton as the main characters.

Alderton is also the author of fiction books Ghosts (2020) and Good Material (2023).

The BBC’s 1995 Pride and Prejudice series is available to watch on iPlayer now.
