Noah Hawley’s version of Star Trek 4 would have included two major stars
As a gamer who has seen countless twists and turns in the narrative of my favorite franchises, I can’t help but feel a sense of deja vu when it comes to Star Trek 4. Noah Hawley, a creative powerhouse with a proven track record, had his fingers on the pulse of an exciting new direction for the Kelvin Timeline. His vision, unfortunately, was derailed by circumstances beyond anyone’s control – much like my own game character getting unexpectedly ambushed by a random NPC.
At one point, Noah Hawley has been linked to the creation of Star Trek 4. In 2019, the mastermind behind Fargo finished up the fourth season of his show and prepared to embark on writing the fourth installment in the Kelvin Timeline. His plan was to reboot the movie with a completely new group of characters, with the plot revolving around a dangerous virus spreading within the Federation. However, given the recent outbreak of Covid-19, this concept unfortunately proved untimely and unsuitable for production.
On Dax Shepard’s “Armchair Expert” podcast, as reported by Slashfilm, Hawley mentioned that he had secured two prominent stars for his film, which include Academy Award winners Cate Blanchett and Rami Malek. However, when his involvement in Star Trek didn’t work out, Hawley confessed that he was disappointed.
It can be very disconcerting and undermining of your sense of confidence, your sense of self. What ‘Fargo’ has afforded me is a sense of arrival and security.
In August 2020, the new president of Paramount Pictures, Emma Watts, temporarily paused Hawley’s project idea to explore other possibilities, such as re-evaluating Quentin Tarantino’s story. However, by November 2020, Hawley confirmed that the film he had been planning would not move forward despite being almost ready for production. The casting process was already initiated, and filming was set to occur in Australia.
Hawley didn’t specify to Shepherd which roles he had planned for Blanchett and Malek in the upcoming film, but given their star status, it’s likely they would have taken center stage. This could potentially mean that any other stars from the previous films, if they were to be included at all, might find themselves sidelined or relegated to secondary roles.
Currently, it’s uncertain whether or not Star Trek 4 will ever be released. Fingers crossed that someday, someone will reignite the project.
