Outer Banks season 4 episode 2's watery hunt for treasure puts the story back on track (Review)

As a gamer who’s spent countless hours navigating treacherous seas and unraveling intricate mysteries, I must say that Outer Banks season 4 episode 2, “Blackbeard,” was a thrilling dive back into the world of the Pogues. This one felt more like the real deal compared to the first, stirring up the adrenaline and keeping me on the edge of my seat.

Prepared for a dive into our analysis of Outer Banks season 4 episode 2, titled “Blackbeard.” I found this installment more appealing than the premiere, as it seemed to rekindle the spirit that makes Netflix’s Outer Banks series unique. Are you ready to join us in discussing our opinions? Let’s get started! (SPOILERS AHEAD)

Absolutely, that watery treasure hunt perfectly encapsulates the essence of the Pogues. Indeed, they’re versatile and demonstrated this when they constructed their surf shop in the premiere. However, when they collaborate on a quest-like endeavor, I couldn’t help but feel my pulse race!

Involving Blackbeard’s treasure and set in the Outer Banks, it was inevitable that water would factor into the story at some point. Wes Genrette claims his family has been plagued by a curse and the vengeful spirit of pirate Blackbeard’s wife, Elizabeth, for centuries. Her ghost is said to have caused the deaths of family members, including his own daughter. Skeptical, The Pogues dismiss his tales of ghostly encounters. Despite their doubts, they require funds and decide to pursue the supposed curse – or more accurately, it’s JJ who makes the call again.

I am wondering now if Outer Banks is going to venture into the supernatural, or perhaps the ghost is just Wes’ imagination. Hmm. With the plan intact, JJ and Kie decide to be the ones to go down together, while John B and Pope keep an eye on things and keep their boat steady above, and Sarah and Cleo watch out for the coast guard. Of course just their luck, there’s also fog to contend with.

Instead of their biggest predicament being the location of the amulet, an unanticipated diver suddenly appears just as JJ and Kiara find it. This stranger means business and gave me quite a scare! Oh my, I think I might have a few premature gray hairs after witnessing that moment. Interestingly enough, this mystery individual turns out to be none other than Lightner, who dropped by the Pogues’ shop in the first episode of Outer Banks season 4.

Phew! Somehow, Kiara and JJ managed to survive, but it was close. With only two episodes in, the risks are skyrocketing. Since we didn’t get the chance for our safety stop during that deep dive, we ended up with the bends, forcing us into the hyperbaric chamber for 12 long hours. Thanks a bunch, Lightner, and his crew of tough guys. Who are they, and what do they want?

In another part of the show, there’s a woman named Hollis Robinson who seems odd and shady. She’s a real estate agent with plans to buy and develop Goat Island, currently owned by the Genrettes, in partnership with Rafe since they’re selling it. The intriguing aspect is that she’s aware of the Genrettes’ suspicion about the island being haunted. Frankly, I’m wary of her intentions, and I’m eager to see how this plotline connects to what the Pogues are currently dealing with.

Regarding the Genrettes, with Kiara and JJ having to remain in the hyperbaric chamber for 12 hours, everyone else decides to collect their earnings for all they’ve been through. Given that JJ managed to secure the amulet, this carefree fellow isn’t exactly known for his wisdom, but that doesn’t diminish his intelligence. However, upon reaching home, Shoupe is present and informs them of Wes’ demise. Earlier, it appeared as if a ghost had encountered Wes. Strange, indeed!

In addition to the situation, John (JJ) had earlier lost his bike to find the exact location of the treasure, which his friend was demanding in return. Granted, after leading them all into this financial predicament, JJ might have deserved some consequences. Furthermore, a bigot named Kook entered the picture, attempting to outbid them for the land and changing their property’s zoning. This could lead to eviction, requiring more funds to challenge the decision. It would have made a more compelling storyline in episode 1 if this had been the initial predicament instead of portraying JJ as simply careless. Oh, and there was also an unknown corpse discovered on the beach. Who could it be?

In the second episode of season 4, the Outer Banks adventure is skillfully established and leaves us pondering several thought-provoking questions. To be truthful, I believe this episode would have been a more impactful premiere as it could have encapsulated the past 18 months’ events quickly before diving into the current action. Instead, it appears to be laying the foundation for the story, leaving us eagerly anticipating what lies ahead next. Grade: B.

The second part of Outer Banks’ season 4 will start streaming on Netflix Thursday, Nov. 7, 2024. Don’t forget to catch up with the reviews for the first part of Outer Banks’ season 4 too!
