Miranda Hart, 51, reveals the moment she 'collapsed' after finally getting an official diagnosis for her three decade mystery health battle: 'I was shocked and felt a deep well of sadness'

As I delve into Miranda Hart’s heartfelt memoir, I am deeply moved by her courage and resilience. Her journey through illness, stress, and loss is a testament to the indomitable spirit of humanity. It’s a reminder that we all carry our own ‘stress pots,’ and learning to manage them can be the difference between collapsing and thriving.

As a devoted admirer, I’d like to share that Miranda Hart has bravely unveiled her three-decade-long health ordeal and the pivotal instance when she was formally diagnosed – she’s been battling Lyme Disease.

In her upcoming memoir, titled I Haven’t Been Entirely Honest With You (releasing on October 10), Miranda opens up about her struggles and the time she experienced a health collapse. After almost a decade away from the limelight, she is sharing her story.

As a die-hard admirer, I’d confess that while the world sees the comedian, aged 51, as the bubbly Chummy in Call The Midwife or her own cheerful sitcom titled Miranda, she’s openly confessed to medical professionals behind closed doors: “I feel tainted and contaminated.

Medical professionals didn’t identify that Miranda had been fighting Lyme Disease for 33 years, initially diagnosing her with agoraphobia, an anxiety condition marked by anxiety symptoms in specific situations.

She recalls running out a doctor’s appointment in floods of tears after they told her she was ‘TATT’ – ‘Tired All The Time’ and said: ‘I just don’t know what to do with you’.

During the lockdown, the comic was officially diagnosed with Lyme Disease, a suspicion that had arisen since she experienced severe flu-like symptoms at age 14 while residing in Virginia.

She writes: ‘For me it was the unnerving neurological symptoms that I had got initially, aged fourteen, from Lyme, which I always found particularly hard to deal with. And they got considerably worse as I headed into my forties. As did the fatigue from the cell depletion. Yup, all delightful.’

As soon as she received her diagnosis, she said: ‘I closed that Zoom meeting, shut my laptop, and remained motionless, stunned. A whirlwind of emotions hit me – I was shocked, but I also instantly felt a profound well of sadness and regret. For over three decades, I’d suspected there was something amiss. I remembered all the times I shared my symptoms with various doctors: “I feel toxic and poisoned,” or, “It’s like I have flu daily without a fever.”‘

“I found it fascinating how my body instinctively signaled its condition, and when I was told I might have agoraphobia, I felt a surge of anger.

In other words, I attempted to handle it like a normal situation, but it was actually fatigue and sensitivity to both light and sound that caused my body to tire quickly whenever I participated in activities or visited lively environments.

As a fervent admirer, I can only imagine the internal turmoil Miranda must have experienced when contemplating the best way to disclose her health journey to her audience. She was undoubtedly concerned about being seen as whining or simply always fatigued, rather than sharing the reality of her situation.

However, Lyme Disease was wreaking havoc within her body, leading to an ongoing series of medical evaluations. Additionally, viewers started to miss her on television as she became less visible.

2017 saw the announcement that Miranda wouldn’t rejoin Call The Midwife due to her hectic professional commitments being the stated cause.

However, she shared during a comedy show in London that she had been experiencing poor health for some time.

In my current state, I’m not quite feeling like my usual self. You see, last year, a bout of illness kept me from engaging in regular exercise.

Currently speaking, the comedian mentions that medical professionals discovered she had fought off Epstein-Barr, mononucleosis, herpes, shingles, and other unpleasant diseases which she prefers not to recall as they all seemed dreadful.

Miranda discusses enduring long-term stress due to frequent viral infections and injuries, which are the main sources of stress for her. Additionally, she has experienced years of apprehension stemming from incorrect diagnoses.

The comedian, based in London and with a demanding profession, found herself under immense pressure until her health eventually deteriorated due to the accumulated stress.

For quite some time, I’ve been experiencing symptoms every morning, which I recognize now were the result of a chronic stress level reaching nearly maximum (9 out of 10), stemming from my yet-to-be-diagnosed Lyme disease and related infections arising from an immune system disorder.

Whatever tasks I undertook that day left me feeling incredibly tired. As a result, I ultimately ran out of energy and fell down.

Pondering over a pivotal experience, Miranda muses that if she had learned to eliminate stressors from her routine, her body might have returned to normal functioning more effectively for recovery.

The star also suffered the ‘excruciating sadness’ of losing her beloved dog Peggy in 2021.

Miranda has owned Peggy, a mixed breed of Shih Tzu and Bichon Frise, since the year 2007. She attributes Peggy with assisting her during challenging times in her life, such as recovering from past heartaches.

She shared the sad news about her beloved, devoted best friend’s passing on Instagram, and mentioned that she would be temporarily stepping away from her job and social media platforms for some time.

Later, she acquired a fresh canine companion, a delightful Poochon named Patti, whom fans affectionately referred to as her “therapeutic pet.

A section from Miranda’s book titled “I Haven’t Always Told the Whole Truth to You” will be available for purchase starting on October 10.
