Legendary director Frank Darabont comes out of retirement to helm Stranger Things 5
As a seasoned gamer who has spent countless hours binge-watching some of the most iconic series out there, I can confidently say that the return of Frank Darabont to the director’s chair for Stranger Things 5 is nothing short of exhilarating news! With his impeccable track record, having directed masterpieces like The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile, this season promises to be a rollercoaster ride of emotions, suspense, and unparalleled storytelling.
Through projects such as “The Shawshank Redemption” and “The Green Mile”, Frank Darabont has solidified his reputation as one of the greatest directors in cinema history. “The Shawshank Redemption” even earned an Academy Award for Best Picture, and it’s often hailed as one of the best films ever made. After retiring over a decade ago, Darabont is coming out of retirement to direct another project: “Stranger Things” season 5.
As a devoted fan, I’m thrilled to share that the masterminds behind Stranger Things, Matt and Ross Duffer, have placed their trust in the talented hands of Darabont for directing two episodes of the upcoming finale. It’s been quite some time since we’ve seen Darabont at the helm; his last directorial project was Mob City back in 2013, a series unfortunately cut short prematurely. He made a significant impact as showrunner for the first two seasons of The Walking Dead on AMC before parting ways reportedly due to budgetary differences with the network. I can hardly wait to see his magic at work again!
What made him emerge from a 10-year break in his career was his strong affinity towards the series, “Stranger Things”. As he shared with Variety, it was primarily because he and his wife are avid fans of the show that led him to come out of retirement. He admired the show’s heartfelt storylines and positive vibes, which resonated deeply with him.
2007 marked the last movie credit for The Mist, directed by Darabont. On the other hand, he’s expected to lead full-length episodes in the TV series, Stranger Things. The upcoming final season is known for its lengthy episodes; episodes 4 of the series surpassed the 90-minute mark.
Regarding whether “Stranger Things” might encourage him to direct more frequently, Darabont is open to all possibilities. He mentioned, “Perhaps, I haven’t yearned for the business, but I have missed being on set with creative minds… It could be a one-time thing, but there’s still time.
The fifth season of “Stranger Things” began shooting in January and is expected to conclude around next year. At the moment, we don’t know when it will be released, but its star, Gaten Matarazzo, predicts that it might come out as early as 2025.
