4 movies that will likely be cancelled very soon

As a die-hard Marvel fan with years of investment in these iconic characters under my belt, I can’t help but feel a tinge of both excitement and apprehension regarding the upcoming projects. On one hand, we have Taika Waititi’s Star Wars movie, which, despite its long-awaited arrival, seems to be caught up in the intricate dance between creativity and scheduling. I’ve seen this before – a tantalizing glimpse of something extraordinary, only for it to slip through my fingers like grains of sand. But then again, I’m an optimist at heart, so I’ll keep my fingers crossed that the stars align for this one.

2021 has been a captivating year for cinema, with some established movie series resurfacing triumphantly, bolstering their financial success. Meanwhile, long-anticipated sequels were finally revealed, shattering box office records. Additionally, there were unexpected hits that exceeded expectations in various markets and rejuvenated their respective franchises. Conversely, there were underperforming films that failed to meet expectations and fell short of their desired impact.

2024 was a fantastic year at the cinema, with some unexpected hits and long-awaited returns. The standout surprise was likely “Godzilla vs. Kong: The New Empire,” which broke records for the MonsterVerse franchise, making it their most successful film yet after five movies. Another delightful return was that of “Deadpool” and “Wolverine,” reviving the billion-dollar era of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Notably, Hugh Jackman’s Logan and Ryan Reynolds’ Wade Wilson made their first appearances in the MCU franchise. Lastly, Disney’s sequel to “Inside Out” has now become the highest-grossing animated film ever made.

2023 has been quite a momentous year, and we haven’t even accounted for upcoming blockbusters like “Joker: Duo Delirium” in October and “Venom: The Final Act.” With such releases on the horizon, it’s exciting to speculate about what cinema might bring in the following months before 2024 arrives. These forthcoming movies may even be ones that fans have been eagerly anticipating for some time now.

Several anticipated films in the pipeline could potentially get scrapped. However, it would be unfortunate if that happens, given the excitement surrounding their release. The potential causes include production complications (often referred to as “development hell”) or shifts in management, which could prevent these upcoming movies from ever making it to the big screen.

Blade

Among Marvel movies, none sparks as much curiosity among fans as undeniably Blade. Regrettably, this is the Marvel film that currently seems to be in the greatest danger. Yes, this development is unexpected for a Marvel Studios production, but if you’ve been eagerly anticipating Blade for the past five years, you’re fully aware of the challenges it has encountered.

As a die-hard fan, I was thrilled when Mahershala Ali was confirmed for the lead role in this upcoming Marvel project at San Diego Comic-Con in 2019. However, it seems that gathering the rest of the team has been a daunting task for Marvel. The production has undergone numerous rewrites and changes in direction, with two directors joining and then departing due to creative disagreements. This tale of repeated starts and stops is eerily reminiscent of DC’s The Flash movie saga, which languished in development limbo for a decade, undergoing numerous transformations. No studio wants to find itself in that kind of situation again.

There’s been talk that Marvel might abandon the Blade movie if they can’t get it just right. Despite Kevin Feige and his team seeming determined to introduce Daywalker into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it’s turning out to be a more complicated task than anticipated. With some of their riskier ventures, such as Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and The Marvels, underperforming at the box office, Marvel appears to be in a phase where they’re taking fewer risks due to this trend. If Blade turns out to be too risky, there’s a possibility they could ultimately choose not to move forward with it.

According to the latest news, the studio might soon make a call regarding the upcoming film, which doesn’t give off an optimistic vibe. The movie has been stuck in development for some time now as they try to find a way to bring it to life, but if they can’t crack it, there’s a possibility of its cancellation. It’s worth noting that the studio has scrapped several planned sequels lately, primarily due to their predecessors’ underperformance. However, in today’s Marvel Cinematic Universe, nothing appears to be safe from such changes. Interestingly, these reports also hint at another MCU project potentially facing difficulties, which we’ll delve into later…

Black Canary

It seems like the Black Canary movie, a spinoff from the “Birds of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation of one Harley Quinn)” released in 2020, has been in development but we haven’t heard much more about it for four years. Jurnee Smollett was supposed to reprise her role as Dinah Laurel Lance from the original movie.

The future of the movie became uncertain following the Warner Bros. Discovery merger, which promptly resulted in the cancellation of the already-produced Batgirl film. Originally destined for release exclusively on WarnerMedia’s streaming service Max, Batgirl, Blue Beetle, and Black Canary were all ready to debut. However, after Batgirl’s cancelation, Blue Beetle was distributed in theaters (where it fell short of expectations). As for Black Canary, there has been no news since.

More recent information about the movie emerged around mid-2022, when Misha Green announced she was working on the script. This was prior to the cancellation of Batgirl, but after that, a representative from Warner Bros. told TVLine that the project was still under development for HBO Max streaming service. However, since then, there have been no new updates regarding it.

The real worrying thing here is the fact that James Gunn and Peter Safran have since announced their own vision for the DC Universe. The new DC Studios bosses are crafting a new shared universe out of the remnants of the old DCEU (in which Black Canary was a part of), announcing a slate of movies that the streaming movie is not part of. So, has it been scrapped?

In essence, it’s reassuring to know that certain elements from the initial DCEU will persist. For instance, Gunn’s series Peacemaker has been renewed for another season, which implies a comeback of several DCEU characters. Given that John Cena’s Peacemaker previously collaborated with Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn, who allied herself with Black Canary, it’s plausible that these DC heroes continue to exist within this universe.

Speaking of which, fans are not hopeful that the film will proceed given Gunn and Safran have unique ideas for the DC Universe, which is unfortunate because Smollett’s portrayal of Black Canary was a captivating character the DCEU failed to fully explore.

Taika Waititi’s Star Wars movie

It’s noticeable that many films on this list, which were initially announced by Disney, Marvel, or Lucasfilm over four years ago, haven’t progressed much since then. Although some of this delay can be attributed to creative challenges within these projects, other hold-ups might stem from the visionaries responsible for bringing them to life and their packed schedules.

It appears Taika Waititi’s Star Wars film may be facing an indefinite delay or potential cancellation, according to a recent report by Daniel Richtman, a trusted industry insider. The project was initially announced in 2020, but since then, there’s been little news about it, leading fans to speculate that its progress might have stalled. This latest development only adds fuel to the uncertainty surrounding the film’s future.

Instead of Lucasfilm and Waititi stating that the delay is solely because the director is meticulously refining the project while juggling other tasks, Kennedy from Lucasfilm playfully noted that “Taika moves at his own pace”, and in an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Waititi himself expressed a preference for not rushing the project.

It’s clear that the project hasn’t done much to reassure fans that it will actually happen. As time passes and a project isn’t completed, the enthusiasm for its release tends to fade. This doesn’t always happen, but it’s not a strategy studios typically embrace voluntarily. With this in perspective, if everything doesn’t fall into place soon, it wouldn’t be unexpected if the movie never gets made.

Armor Wars

Don Cheadle has been a consistent actor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for quite some time now. He debuted as James “Rhodey” Rhodes in Iron Man 2, which was released in 2010, taking over the role from Terrence Howard. Since then, he’s made the character his own and has become one of the most adored figures within the entire Marvel Universe franchise. After spending years assisting others as War Machine and battling alongside The Avengers, Cheadle is now set to shine in the limelight with Armor Wars.

The “Armor Wars” initiative was initially unveiled in 2020, but since then, there’s been minimal progress on it. In truth, the most substantial development was its transformation into a movie, which was announced as a Disney Plus series two years earlier. However, even that happened over two years ago, leaving fans puzzled about the current status of the project.

Recent speculations indicate that the film might be on an indefinite pause, seemingly stalled and awaiting Marvel’s imminent decision regarding its continuation. This situation, if true, seems to imply a lack of commitment from the studio, which could be disheartening for fans who have waited eagerly for four years to see this title come to life.

The upcoming film, titled “Armor Wars,” is poised to serve as a spiritual sequel to the Iron Man series, centering around Rhodey, Tony Stark’s trusted friend and sidekick, who endeavors to safeguard Stark’s legacy when his Iron Man technology gets into harmful hands. Frankly, this setup seems promising. For far too long, Rhodey has been overlooked, and given the mishandling of his character development in “Secret Invasion,” it’s high time he takes center stage in a storyline that truly reflects his significance as an original Marvel Cinematic Universe character. It would be unjust to deny him this moment – and us fans – after such a long wait for it.
