David Tennant teases “exciting” soundtrack for new ’80s drama

As a child of the ’80s myself, I can’t help but feel a wave of nostalgia as I anticipate the arrival of “Rivals” on Disney+. David Tennant’s tease about the exciting soundtrack, with hits like Robert Palmer’s “Addicted to Love” and Paul Simon’s “You Can Call Me Al,” has me reminiscing about my own walkman days.

David Tennant has teased an “exciting” soundtrack for new ’80s drama Rivals.

Stepping into the shoes of a ’80s gaming avatar, I find myself immersed in an exclusive world, where I’m pitted against two formidable characters – Lord Tony Baddingham (played by Tennant) and MP Rupert Campbell-Black (portrayed by Alex Hassell). This captivating series is a reimagining of Dame Jilly Cooper’s beloved novel, highlighting the intense rivalry that sets these social elites apart.

Prior to the show’s launch on Disney+ in October, Tennant recently discussed on BBC Radio 2’s Breakfast Show (September 20) some ’80s hits that will be incorporated into the upcoming series, which he is a part of.

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but share the exciting news: The opening scene of this show is graced by Robert Palmer’s timeless 1985 hit, “Addicted to Love.” And if that wasn’t enough, it also includes Paul Simon’s chart-topping classic, “You Can Call Me Al,” which was released a year later in 1986. These iconic tunes truly set the stage for an unforgettable viewing experience!

Additionally, Tennant discussed the authentic period elements featured within the series, such as the “yuppie” culture and the first generation of mobile phones, which he humorously likened to being as large as a house.

He clarified to Scott Mills that the topic under discussion was from the year 1986, which happened to be a period when the world seemed particularly chaotic or unstable.

“That sort of greed is good, no such thing as society, champagne concorde, people kind of competing with each other and these sort of awful people living in the Cotswolds, having this extraordinary, mad, privileged, lunatic life.”

This production includes Aidan Turner from “Poldark,” Nafessa Williams of “Black Lightning,” Katherine Parkinson known for “Humans,” Bella Maclean hailing from “Sex Education,” Emily Atack famous for “The Inbetweeners,” Danny Dyer best recognized by “EastEnders,” Lisa McGrillis popular in “Maternal,” and Luke Pasqualino, a star from “Our Girl.

The talented cast for various upcoming productions includes Catriona Chandler (Enola Holmes 2), Oliver Chris (Foundation), Rufus Jones (Camping), Claire Rushbrook (Ali & Ava), Victoria Smurfit (Once Upon a Time), Anthony Byrne (The Witcher) and Bryony Hannah (Call the Midwife). In simpler terms, these actors have been added to the impressive line-up for upcoming projects.

BAFTA-nominated filmmaker Elliot Hegarty, known for his work on Ted Lasso, is the lead director.

Previously discussing the transformation of her well-known book, Cooper expressed: “It’s a delightful surprise to reveal our stellar cast for the novel ‘Rivals‘.

Showcasing some exceptional acting prowess from the British Isles’ finest actors, I can’t imagine a more perfect group for this project. I am eagerly anticipating our time together on set, watching them breathe life into the characters I hold dear.

As soon as we crossed paths with Alex, it was clear that he would flawlessly personify my longstanding role model, the legendary, charismatic, relentless, and undeniably attractive Rupert Campbell-Black. Audience members are in for a delight!

Rivals is coming to Disney+ on October 18.
