IndyCar: How a disastrous race saved Alex Palou’s championship

As a seasoned gamer of racing games, I can say that the nail-biting finish at the Milwaukee Mile was reminiscent of a thrilling final lap in a high-stakes race on Forza Motorsport. The ups and downs, the heartache of a mechanical issue, and the exhilaration of a comeback were all there, making it one of the most gripping races I’ve experienced, both on and off the screen.

As I, Alex Palou from Chip Ganassi Racing, geared up for the second race of this doubleheader at Milwaukee Mile, I found myself leading the IndyCar championship standings by a substantial 43 points over Will Power of Team Penske. With only two races left in our grueling 17-race schedule of 2024, that cushion felt pretty solid.

Because of a battery problem, Palou’s No. 10 Honda couldn’t start when everyone else did at the green flag. By the time he managed to get back on the track, it appeared that catching up was impossible since he was already 29 laps behind the lead lap.

Meanwhile, power seized the front position, giving him a three-point advantage over Palou with their ongoing race. Unfortunately, this was the most disadvantageous situation for the 27-year-old Spanish driver at a critical moment.

However, with each passing driver and vehicle withdrawing from the competition due to accidents or personal mechanical troubles, Palou gradually closed the gap.

As a devoted fan, I found myself rejoicing as Palou regained the lead after Power’s pit stop. However, the excitement was short-lived when Power unfortunately made a crucial mistake during a restart, causing him to spin out slightly, barely touching the wall.

After the competition was over, Power ended up in 10th position, while Palou significantly improved his standing, moving up eight places from 27th to finish 19th. On a day when he only managed to earn 11 points, he effectively gained 36 points, as he moved from being behind by three points to being ahead by 33 points before the final race at Nashville Superspeedway.

It was by far the most rewarding 19th place finish he had experienced during his racing career.

Indeed, yes,” Palou shared with Beyond the Flag. “It was truly unfortunate about the battery problem that prevented us from racing, but it was incredible to see my team’s swift response and determination to get me back on track. Everyone worked tirelessly to diagnose the issue, reacted quickly, and were well-prepared.

Indeed, it was an incredibly enjoyable and satisfying 19th position I’ve ever achieved in my career. There were many highs and lows throughout the race. Initially, things looked quite bleak for me. However, as the day progressed, we managed to regain some points due to other cars encountering problems and dropping out of the competition. Although there was an issue during a restart, we still gained 33 points which was a significant victory for our team.

In any race, a driver has the potential to earn up to 49 points from another driver, with the winner potentially earning as many as 54 points. At least five points are guaranteed for every competitor. Consequently, a difference of 33 points wasn’t particularly reassuring compared to a 43-point gap, especially since Power managed to reverse the situation by 46 points in just a few laps during the early stages at Milwaukee.

As a gamer, in my 66-race journey with Chip Ganassi Racing since Palou joined, only once did Power outperform me by a whopping 33 points – that one time was at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course back in 2021. On that fateful day, my No. 10 car suffered an engine failure, while Power sailed to victory.

Gee, I didn’t realize that,” Palou exclaimed about the 1-in-66 statistic. “It would have been helpful if you had shared that information with me before our trip to Nashville!

Regardless of Power’s moves at Nashville, Palou was as composed, poised, and strategic as they come, and he was confident that he possessed the skills necessary to clinch the win, regardless of Power’s actions.

He expressed high spirits about our position in the championship given our points advantage. He felt certain that we had the power to determine our own fate. In other words, if we managed to secure ninth place regardless of his performance, such as getting pole position, winning races, or leading the most laps, we were still guaranteed the championship title. This level of control gave him a great sense of confidence.

In simpler terms, Palou finished just outside the top 9 in this race, a position he rarely finds himself in since the beginning of the 2023 season. However, this outcome can be attributed mainly to the fact that the championship fight was settled quite early due to Power’s early trouble with his seatbelt.

Palou admitted, “We had the capability to succeed, yet I must add, it wasn’t a walk in the park. He has shown remarkable strength alongside Team Penske on oval tracks this season, while we’ve faced some challenges.

Looking back, Power might have clinched a victory at Milwaukee even if Palou was last, but Palou would still have secured the championship because of Power’s seatbelt problem. However, relying on an issue that Power had never encountered during his racing career before Sunday wasn’t a strategy Palou felt comfortable with, especially given that his rival started 20 positions ahead of him.

As Milwaukee showed, anything can happen.

Starting from the 24th position due to an engine penalty, it wasn’t going to be straightforward to reach P9 (9th place). With so many cars ahead of us, overtaking was a challenging task. Unfortunately, despite some troubles he encountered, we didn’t quite manage to make up the ground, finishing the race in 11th position instead.

Instead of choosing the optimistic strategy, we opted for a more cautious approach as we wanted to ensure the championship was definitively secured. However, while I felt relatively certain about our chances, I wouldn’t say I was completely convinced.
