The video, which features clips from the Disney+ series, lists the show’s run as being from 2019 to 2023. This choice to end the timeline with Season 3’s release—instead of presenting the show as continuing—strongly implies that Lucasfilm currently has no plans for a fourth season.
Lucasfilm Sees The Mandalorian as Finished Since 2023
Jon Favreau, the creator of the series and director of The Mandalorian and Grogu, revealed that a fourth season was once in development. Scripts were even written, but Lucasfilm ultimately decided to turn the story into a feature film instead. Now, if a fourth season were to happen, the writers would essentially have to start over to align with the events of the movie.
According to SFX magazine, Jon Favreau said you couldn’t simply adapt those scripts directly into a movie. He explained that they featured many characters, relied on viewers being familiar with the entire show, and were setting up events for the second season of Ahsoka. The story focused on Grand Admiral Thrawn and continued the broader narrative within that period of the Star Wars timeline.
The Mandalorian and Grogu Wasn’t as Successful as Planned
There were plans to continue the story of Grogu and Din Djarin in future movies based on The Mandalorian and Grogu. However, those chances have decreased now that the film hasn’t performed as well at the box office. While it has earned almost $345 million globally, it received mixed reactions from critics.
Lucasfilm plans to continue telling stories in the world of Star Wars. The series Ahsoka, a spin-off of The Mandalorian, is coming back for a second season. The first season, which premiered in 2023, was popular with both viewers and critics, and attracted a large audience on Disney+.
