The Rings of Power composer "thrilled" that someone caught this Sauron easter egg

As a seasoned gamer and ardent fan of the Middle Earth saga, I must confess that the latest twists in The Rings of Power have sent my heart racing like the hooves of a wild horse through the Shire! Sauron’s cunning disguise as Annatar is reminiscent of the time I fell for the infamous GLaDOS while playing Portal, only to discover her true intentions later.

In the second season of The Rings of Power, Sauron has cleverly transformed into a seemingly benevolent figure named Annatar, assisting the Elven smith Celebrimbor in crafting rings imbued with power. However, Sauron’s ultimate goal is to manipulate these rings for his own sinister intentions. Meanwhile, Galadriel, who previously encountered Sauron’s temptations in the first season, finds herself confronting an old friend. She is headed towards the Elven city of Eregion, where Sauron plies his trade at the forge.

It’s inevitable that these two will cross paths eventually. Yet, their connection runs deeper even before their encounter. For starters, Saruon has a tendency to point out blonde-haired elf women and remark they resemble Galadriel, which, let me tell you, is far from creepy. The connections are subtler in other instances. For example, in the opening episode, Galadriel mentions that Sauron “manipulated me, using me like a harp to play a tune not of my choosing.” As she speaks, the faint strains of Sauron’s theme can be heard from a harp in the background.

I stumbled upon a clever musical Easter egg in The Rings of Power, subtly inserted by its composer Bear McCreary, who has also enriched shows like Black Sails, Outlander, The Walking Dead, and Percy Jackson and the Olympians. I wouldn’t have caught that subtle melody if not for a keen-eared fan bringing it to my attention on Twitter. Interestingly enough, McCreary himself acknowledged their sharp ear in a compliment.

There are just three episodes remaining before the second season of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” concludes. We can expect composer Bear McCreary to have even more audio surprises in store for us, given that the show is about to depict the siege of Eregion, a significant battle from J.R.R. Tolkien’s books.
