The Perfect Couple episode 6 recap: What did we just watch?

As a long-time fan of gripping murder mysteries and soapy dramas, I must confess that “The Perfect Couple” has left me with a peculiar sense of disappointment and frustration. Having eagerly devoured each episode since its premiere, I found myself yearning for a more satisfying conclusion to this intricate tale of deceit, betrayal, and murder.

Spoilers ahead if you are not caught up on The Perfect Couple.

In episode 6 of “The Perfect Couple”, everyone is still reeling from the events that transpired at Greer’s book launch party, rather than the murder of Meritt, which seems to be a topic of little interest for anyone except Amelia and the authorities. Let me give you a quick recap! We do find out who killed Meritt, but I must say, it falls short of expectations. Now, let’s dive in!

The Perfect Couple episode 6 recap: What did we just watch?

In the story, Nicole Kidman’s character, Greer, is interrogated concerning Tommy Flanagan’s character, Broderick Graham. It’s suspected that Greer hired him to commit a murder on Meritt. However, the $300,000 she wired to Broderick was more than just a simple gift, leading us to believe it was payment for a service. We discover that Broderick is Greer’s brother and he has a serious gambling problem. The money was intended to help him get out of his predicament. This information aligns with what Chief Carter (Michael Beach) and Detective Henry (Donna Lynne Champlin) know, so Greer is set free. Yet, we also find out more about her…

At home, Tag (played by Liev Schreiber) is crafting a sincere apology. In the meantime, Greer, visibly frustrated with the deception, openly admits to those present that she and Tag first met at a bar where she was employed as an escort, this service being supervised by her own brother. Wow, that’s quite surprising. Such a peculiar family enterprise, isn’t it?

Who killed Meritt?

Instead of a disappointing ending, it was Abby (Dakota Fanning) who turned out to be the murderer of Meritt. Given their past history, this revelation might not have been surprising since Abby was hardly sympathetic towards Meritt. Abby and her husband Thomas (Jack Reynor) had been eagerly awaiting the release of Thomas’s trust fund money for their son, primarily to maintain their opulent lifestyle. However, with Meritt pregnant, they would now have to wait 18 more years before the youngest Winbury sibling, Will (Sam Nivola), turned 18. Unwilling to endure such a delay, Abby decided to take matters into her own hands.

How did the police manage to solve this case? They discovered barbiturates in Meritt’s blood, a potent substance. When Amelia shared this information with her mother, the name sounded familiar. This was because Amelia’s mom recalled that she had a sedative called pentobarbital (a type of barbiturate medication) at home. Beji (Billy Howle) then understood that his brother Thomas must have taken the drug. Carter and Henry gradually put together more pieces of the puzzle and eventually solved it: Abby had crushed the pill and given it to Meritt in a drink, causing her to become drowsy. This made it easy for Abby to submerge Meritt’s head under water until she drowned.

It seems as though there was room for a lot more development in the story of “The Perfect Couple”. Given the impressive acting talent involved, I can’t help but wonder if it could have reached even greater heights. How did you find the movie?
