Cate Blanchett says 'Lord of the Rings' cast didn't rake it in. A perk: 'I got to keep my ears'

As a seasoned cinephile who’s witnessed the rise and fall of countless celluloid empires, I must say that Cate Blanchett’s recent revelation about the “Lord of the Rings” cast’s lackluster paychecks has left me both astonished and disheartened. In my day, we didn’t just get free sandwiches for our efforts; no, we demanded our fair share of the box office gold!

As a part of the esteemed ensemble cast of “The Lord of the Rings” film series, I can confidently say that our remuneration wasn’t as substantial as one might assume.

The Academy Award-winning actor appeared Tuesday with Gina Gershon on “Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen” to promote the two’s upcoming sci-fi film “Borderlands.”

During the interview, Cohen inquired from Blanchett about which movie of hers had earned her the most money.

Cohen guessed: “I think it’s probably ‘Lord of the Rings.’”

As a cinephile, let me tell you, I was taken aback when I heard this: “Seriously? Absolutely not,” I responded. “Not a single soul was compensated for that film… Honestly, it was like getting a free lunch box, and I got to keep my pointy elf ears as a souvenir!”

Actress Cate Blanchett, well-known for her role in “Tár” and an advocate for fair wages in the entertainment industry, commented that “women in Hollywood are not paid as generously as people might assume.” This viewpoint was supported by Gershon.

In the Lord of the Rings trilogy, the cast members were compensated, but their earnings didn’t quite reach blockbuster levels. For instance, Orlando Bloom, who portrayed Legolas in the series, mentioned that his remuneration was relatively low during filming. On The Howard Stern Show in 2023, he revealed that he received only $175,000 for all three movies.

Cate Blanchett, known for portraying the noble elf with magical abilities in Middle-earth, called Galadriel, returned to her part in the “Hobbit” prequels’ series as well.

Her motivation for joining the cast? “I wanted to work for the guy who made ‘Braindead.’”

Peter Jackson, renowned for directing “The Lord of the Rings,” also helmed the New Zealand horror-comedy “Braindead” (released in the U.S. as “Dead Alive” in 1993). In this film, Timothy Balme portrayed Lionel, whose mother, played by Elizabeth Moody as Vera Cosgrove, was turned into a zombie after being bitten by a Sumatran rat-monkey.

The epic “Lord of the Rings” trilogy by Jackson garnered a staggering $2.9 billion globally; impressively, the initial film earned an astounding $898.2 million independently.

Cate Blanchett might find herself undergoing a fitting role as she graces our screens in the science fiction action movie “Borderlands,” which is based on the widely recognized video game of the same name. In this film, Blanchett portrays Lilith, a notorious bounty hunter with a puzzling past, who initially resists going back to her tumultuous home, Pandora – the most disorderly planet in the cosmos. Alongside Blanchett, Édgar Ramírez and Kevin Hart lend their talents to this adaptation. “Borderlands” hits theaters on Friday.
