The company enjoyed a fantastic first year of sales, but is now experiencing a downturn, with its stock price falling after the latest financial report. Although many point to the planned price increase for the Switch 2 as the cause, the core problem lies in a surprisingly different approach to how Nintendo is marketing its games.
Honestly, I’m a little shocked by how well the Nintendo Switch 2 is doing! It launched with Mario Kart World, and while I was excited, it just didn’t live up to the hype. The open world felt unfinished, and there wasn’t nearly enough to do compared to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Since then, we’ve only gotten a couple of really good first-party games – Donkey Kong Bananza and Pokémon Pokopia. Pokopia was pretty great, and almost worth getting the system for, but overall, it feels like something’s not quite right with the exclusive game lineup.
Nintendo’s Share Price Dropping Isn’t About Hardware Prices
Nintendo’s stock price fell sharply on May 11, 2026, dropping by 7% – the largest single-day decrease since the days of the Wii U console. This drop followed the announcement of a new system update, scheduled to launch in North America and Europe in September.
Although the price increase will be unwelcome, Nintendo isn’t the only company doing it – Sony and Microsoft have also raised prices on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. Plus, fans still have several months to buy the current Switch at its original price if they’re interested.
The recent news about the Nintendo Switch 2 isn’t about exciting new games, but rather the planned release schedule for 2026. The games announced so far are fairly underwhelming, especially considering how few have confirmed release dates. Those who buy the Switch 2 at launch will mainly be getting Splatoon Raiders, a largely single-player Splatoon game, Yoshi and the Mysterious Book, which appears similar to other Yoshi games, and a remake of Star Fox 64 – a game fans can already access through the Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pass.
Several promising games, including Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave and The Duskbloods, are currently slated for release in 2026. However, they aren’t expected to be major hits that drive console sales, and their release dates might even slip to 2027.
Nintendo Needs To Revive The General Direct Format
As a Nintendo fan, I’m a little worried about how they’re handling the news about the Switch 2. They used to have these huge Direct presentations that got everyone hyped, but those seem to be gone. Now we just get smaller showcases for indie games, which are cool, but not the same. And the big announcements for first-party games? They’re just appearing randomly on this Nintendo Today app they want us to use. Honestly, I think most people are going to find out about the cool stuff on Twitter or YouTube, not by checking the app every day!
Honestly, I’m a little puzzled by Nintendo ditching the Directs format. I get the idea that they felt like they were cramming too much into one presentation, and spacing things out might give each announcement more impact. But, and this is a big but, the Directs were huge events, and this new approach just doesn’t have the same excitement. It feels like they’ve lost some of that special something.
Nintendo missed a chance to start 2026 strong with a big presentation. It would have been the ideal time to announce games like Star Fox. Now, details are slipping out because Nintendo is delaying announcements. It’s frustrating that information was confirmed before Nintendo could officially share it. This game should have been revealed a long time ago, but Nintendo’s cautious approach is making announcements less exciting.
The lack of news about major game franchises, combined with frequent, unexpected announcements of smaller titles, is creating the impression that Nintendo doesn’t have any big hits in the works. Hopefully, the recent decline in the company’s stock price will motivate them to finally reveal some exciting new games.
The Switch 2 has a few good games, but none are compelling enough to justify buying the console right now. Nintendo needs to release some must-have titles quickly, or people might lose interest and see the Switch 2 as another failed system like the Wii U.
