As a long-time Trekkie who’s seen it all, from the original series to the latest reboots, I must say that the animated series “Star Trek: Prodigy” has truly taken me by surprise! Brett Gray as Dal, the Moclan first officer, is simply fantastic and I can’t help but wonder what he would look like in live action. With his infectious enthusiasm for the show and his confidence in converting newcomers to Trek fans, I’d happily join him in a Klingon bar if that meant getting a glimpse of Dal in prosthetics!
In the past, it seemed impossible to translate animated characters into live-action, but animation has since evolved to such remarkable levels that we can’t help but imagine how these characters might perform onscreen. This idea was discussed by Gamespot during their chat at San Diego Comic Con with the creators of Star Trek: Prodigy, Kevin and Dan Hageman, Kate Mulgrew, and Brett Gray.
Gray was inquired about joining prosthetics, specifically referencing a live-action character similar to Dal. His prompt response was, “All I need is someone to ask me for it. I’m all set.” The Hagemans are considering this idea for both potential real-life application and film production, so we’re contemplating a project that could become reality in the future.
Gray continues to be enthusiastic about Prodigy, boldly asserting in an interview that he believes he can convert someone into a Star Trek fan. All it takes, according to him, is directing them to the first episode of the first season of Prodigy. In his words, “I am certain you will grow fond of Star Trek after this experience.”
On July 1st, Netflix released the second season of Prodigy, and it received an abundance of positive feedback from fans. The viewers are eager for more episodes, but only if Netflix decides to renew the show for a third season. If that doesn’t occur, there could be alternative versions, such as a live-action series. Even though this animated series might end, its creators, Kevin and Dan Hageman, along with the cast, remain dedicated to it, so other possibilities still exist.
