Riverdale creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa to make horror-comedy version of Bat Boy for Netflix
As a seasoned gamer and avid fan of pop culture, I can’t help but feel intrigued by the upcoming live-action Bat Boy series on Netflix. Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa has always had an uncanny knack for breathing life into unconventional characters, as seen in his work on Riverdale, Sabrina, and Pretty Little Liars. The thought of him tackling such a unique creature as Bat Boy is a tantalizing prospect.
Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa is a highly active individual, often immersed in numerous ventures. The majority of people recognize him as the brain behind hit TV shows such as “Riverdale”, “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina”, and the revamped “Pretty Little Liars” series. Currently, he’s collaborating with Joe Tracz on a live-action “Bat Boy” series for Netflix, also working on “One Piece” in a co-showrunner capacity.
A few individuals might recognize the fictitious being known as Bat Boy, but many may not. Introduced in the American tabloid Weekly World News during the ’90s, this unique character was a blend of half-bat and half-boy. This character’s tale eventually transformed into an Off-Broadway musical titled “Bat Boy: The Musical” in 1997. However, it’s crucial to note that the forthcoming live-action series bears no resemblance or connection to the musical.
Aguirre-Sacasa is set to oversee the production of “Bat Boy” under his production company, Muckle Man Productions, as part of his ongoing deal with Warner Bros. Television. Moreover, Tracz, Jimmy Gibbons, and Weekly World News Editor-in-Chief Greg D’Alessandro have also been enlisted to executive produce this project.
The young adult horror-comedy will revolve around its title character, a teenager known as Bobby Bates. For quite some time, Bobby has been secluded from society in an abandoned amusement park on the town’s outskirts. This changes when he encounters two teenage sisters, Charisma and Olive, who reintroduce him to life in civilization.
In the local high school of Cypressville, named Cypressville High, he signs up and strives to blend into society and maneuver through this novel environment while simultaneously working on unraveling a mystery. However, he soon comprehends that blending in won’t be straightforward, particularly when you’re part bat and part human, and your appetite yearns for human blood.
