The annual Swan Upping continues a 12th century tradition on King Charles' behalf

As a dedicated gamer and history enthusiast, I find the rich traditions of the British monarchy to be nothing short of fascinating. The latest event that has piqued my interest is the ancient tradition of “Swan Upping,” a practice that dates back to the 12th century.

The customs surrounding the British monarchy are rich and diverse, with intriguing histories behind each one. For instance, one lesser-known title held by the monarch is “Lord of the Swans.” This role, which dates back to the 12th century, recently made headlines in a significant event.

According to People, King Charles III recently participated in the Swan Upping:

Since the 12th century the British crown held the right to claim ownership of all unmarked swans swimming in open waters throughout the U.K. The Royal Swan Marker, currently David Barber, sets out with a team every July for an ancient tradition known as Swan Upping, the annual census of the swan population on the River Thames focused on a 79-mile stretch from Sunbury-on-Thames to Abingdon.

In the King’s service

During Swan Upping, the skiffs, oars, and flags carry the monarch’s emblem that was recently introduced. This emblem, which has been in use since the end of Queen Elizabeth II’s mourning period, is now more frequently seen, with its display depending on each organization’s decision.

Based on my extensive experience working in the royal household, I can confidently say that the prevalent use of the cypher and Barber’s identification as “His Majesty’s Swan Marker” signify that he is representing the monarch in his duties. This is a common practice among those who serve in the royal court, ensuring the monarch’s presence and influence are felt even when they are not physically present. Growing up in this unique environment has given me a deep appreciation for the traditions and protocols that uphold the prestige of the monarchy.

Modern mindsets

For several centuries, this weekly occasion has evolved in meaning. In the past, swans were essential for grand feasts. However, nowadays, the role of a Swan Marker focuses on preserving these graceful creatures.

It’s worth doing because if we didn’t, the population of swans would just gradually disappear.

David Barber

As a gamer, I can relate this to a game where the population of a certain creature is declining. I remember hearing from the in-game Swan Marker that we should expect fewer cygnet spawns because of the severe Avian influenza outbreak during Autumn/Winter 2022. Sadly, thousands of swans in the game world succumbed to the disease. However, according to Barber, most of this year’s cygnets were found to be in excellent shape, defying the expectations set by the harsh conditions.

I wasn’t among those from the Royal Family who could make it to this year’s event, but I’ve fondly recalled previous Swan Upping occasions when Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and Princess Anne have graced us with their presence. They’ve always shown great care for our kingdom’s current swan population.
