I’ve always thought a mobile game based on Death Note should be a high priority. Created by Tsugumi Ohba, this thrilling manga first came out in 2003 and quickly became incredibly popular, even with people who don’t usually follow anime. The clever plot, constant intellectual challenges, and overall excitement are still captivating, and that’s why we really need a Death Note mobile game – and soon!
Featured Column – Mobile Games We Wish Existed
GamingonPhone’s ‘Mobile Games We Wish Existed’ is a regular feature where we brainstorm exciting new game ideas and consider how well-loved franchises could work on mobile devices. We explore both popular and lesser-known games, thinking about what would make them fun and easy to play while you’re on the move.
What is Death Note all about
Okay, if you’re just discovering Death Note, let me quickly explain what it’s all about! Basically, it’s a really intense psychological thriller with some supernatural stuff thrown in. It centers around Light Yagami – he’s a fantastic villain you can’t help but be fascinated by – who finds this strange notebook. It turns out it belongs to Ryuk, a Shinigami who just loves apples, and that’s when the whole crazy story kicks off!
The notebook he received is special – it gives him the power to kill anyone he writes down, as long as he knows their name and what they look like. I especially enjoyed the story and its surprising turn, watching Light go from wanting to improve the world by eliminating criminals to developing a god complex, and the intense psychological battle that follows between him and the detective L.
I think people love this series because, even without over-the-top action, it’s incredibly gripping thanks to its story, suspense, and clever strategies. I remember being on the edge of my seat during the first face-off between L and Light, and there were so many moments like that throughout the show.
Genre for an imagined Death Note game
I’m hoping this game doesn’t play like DEATH NOTE: Killer Within, the online deduction game on PC. I’d prefer a fresh experience for mobile. I’d love a story-focused RPG where you investigate and make choices that really matter. Picture yourself as L, collecting evidence, following leads, and making decisions that affect how the story ends. It would be great if every choice had consequences, forcing you to think strategically, just like L does in the anime.
The game could also feature special missions that introduce new characters, challenges, and psychological twists. I don’t want it to be strictly a social deduction game, but it would be amazing to have multiplayer battles of wits where one player takes on the role of Kira (Light Yagami) and the others work to reveal their identity through investigations, clues, and other means. Just imagining these possibilities gets me really excited about a Death Note game!
Art style and visuals for an imagined Death Note game
If a Death Note mobile game is ever made, I’d prefer it have a dark and realistic art style, rather than the bright, colorful look of the new The God Of Highschool Change game. I really like the sleek menus and visual presentation of games like Persona 5: The Phantom X, and a similar style could work well for a dialogue-focused Death Note RPG, just without all the over-the-top effects.
I imagine the game would be great set in rainy city environments, or during investigations in a shadowy interrogation room, with detailed close-ups during intense talks between characters like Kira, L, and Misa. While good graphics are nice, I think a strong atmosphere is more important. I just don’t want the characters to look overly cute or cartoonish, like in many manga and anime games.
Beloved characters that could shine in a Death Note mobile game
A major reason people love Death Note is its compelling characters, and incorporating them into a game could really make it stand out. Imagine playing as Light Yagami, L, Misa, Near, or even Ryuk, and completing objectives as those characters.
To make this game really stand out on mobile, each character could have unique skills or ways of solving mysteries. It would be amazing to play as either L or Light and directly experience their intense mental battles. Adding Ryuk’s quirky personality or creating missions focused on the rivalry between Near and Mello could also make the game incredibly captivating.
Why a Death Note game will be great for mobile
It’s easy to see why a Death Note game would be perfect for mobile devices. With a large and dedicated fanbase already in place, a game focusing on investigation, story, and choices would be ideal for short, engaging play sessions. This approach could appeal to both fans of the anime and players who enjoy detective or mystery games.
To keep players engaged for a long time, future developers could add new and interesting cases, different ways the story could end, or special events that only happen for a limited time. Considering how popular Death Note already is, a high-quality mobile game version has the potential to be incredibly successful.
