World of Warcraft’s Warband character-select screen made me emotional

As a long-time player of World of Warcraft (WoW), I can’t help but feel a deep connection to this game that has been a part of my life for over two decades. The recent pre-patch update, which introduced major changes including Warbands and a revamped character select screen, has brought back a flood of memories and emotions.

To put it simply, World of Warcraft, which turns 20 this year, has undergone significant transformations since its inception. Most notably, these transitions occur through “pre-patch” updates leading up to new expansions. Previous pre-patches have revamped the questing on the original continents, adjusted item stats, lowered character levels, overhauled talent trees, and fundamentally reshaped the game as a whole.

The pre-release for the tenth expansion, named “The War Within,” has been officially unveiled, advancing World of Warcraft to version 11.0. This release brought about the first major overhaul of the character selection screen in the game’s lifespan – an apparently small change that left me with a startled feeling.

Let me explain.

In the upcoming patch 11.0, one significant change introduced by World of Warcraft developer Blizzard is the implementation of Warbands. Instead of advancing progression solely on individual characters, they are shifting towards account-wide advancement. Reputation, for instance, will now be pooled among all your characters, catering to the growing trend of players maintaining multiple characters, or “alts.” To streamline this experience, Blizzard has introduced Warbands – a collective term for all the characters under one account, regardless of faction affiliations or server locations. (For further information, check out this official Blizzard blog post.)

Imagine your Warband gathered in one place on World of Warcraft’s character selection screen, with all your characters displayed together, even if they are on different servers. Picture them seated comfortably around a warm campfire. In contrast to the past when each character had an individual portrait against their race-specific background, this new setup allows for a more cohesive and interactive experience. Blizzard intends to add more Warband scenes in the future, possibly accommodating more than four characters.

For someone unfamiliar with your long-term experience in a specific video game, it may be challenging to express the significance of placing four of your alternate characters alongside one another. However, let me put it this way: I’ve been investing countless hours into these virtual personas for two decades. It was an emotional moment when I could finally bring a few of them together in the same digital space. These avatars have been a significant part of my gaming journey, but until now, they hadn’t had the chance to interact. As they all belong to the same account, I needed to log out of one to play another, preventing any real encounters. Now, I can observe them relaxing around a campfire and share stories about their adventures.

These characters in the game signify more than just various stages of it for me. they are a reflection of different periods in my life and the friends I’ve had during those times. There is my initial troll warrior, whom I played with while tanking in the game’s early days, and who crafted mechanical squirrel pets as gifts for every member of my original guild. My night elf druid, the only Alliance character I ever truly connected with, represents my long-distance gaming sessions with my oldest friend Rob when he lived far away. My troll hunter has been a constant companion since at least The Burning Crusade expansion, and we even had a brief stint in raids during the late 2000s. Lastly, there’s my Tauren monk, an unusual race/class combination that I created to game with my wife after we moved in together, sharing carefree Sundays while sitting next to each other.

Twenty years have passed since I started playing this game, and it has deeply influenced my life. Each game session created precious memories, connected to authentic experiences and people. The new character-select screen of WoW is reminiscent of a cherished photo album, gathering those moments into one place for the first time. I’m really fond of this feature.
