Okay, so I just got a peek at the first look for the A Different World reboot, and it’s wild to think the original premiered way back in ’87! It’s cool they’re bringing back some familiar faces alongside a whole new generation of students. Almost four decades later, and Hillman College is opening its doors again – I’m definitely excited to see how this turns out.
Netflix announced that the highly anticipated series will debut on September 24, 2026. The show centers around a fresh group of students at Hillman College, but fans will also be happy to see familiar faces like Whitley Gilbert (Jasmine Guy), Dwayne Wayne (Kadeem Hardison), Freddie Brooks (Cree Summer), and Ron Johnson (Darryl M. Bell) returning. A new teaser trailer revealing the premiere date has just been released and is available to watch.
A Different World Officially Returns in September
The highly anticipated sequel to A Different World is back at Hillman College! This time, the story follows a new group of students, alongside some familiar characters returning to campus. At the heart of the series is Deborah Wayne (played by Maleah Joi Moon), the youngest daughter of Whitley and Dwayne. She’s a spirited and kind-hearted young woman who’s still discovering who she is and what she wants while navigating life at Hillman.
As Imani continues her journey, she meets a diverse group of students who represent the many experiences of Black life at Howard University. These include Rashida Duvall, a first-generation college student studying criminal justice; Shaquille Johnson, a highly recruited athlete grappling with his family’s expectations; Amir Rodale, a perceptive psychology major who is better at helping others than dealing with his own issues; Hazel Henry, a small-town girl raised in the church who’s forging her own path; and Kojo Achebe, a fashion entrepreneur of Ghanaian and Nigerian descent determined to pursue his dreams.
A New Ensemble Cast Takes the Spotlight
The updated version of A Different World is led by Felicia Pride, who wrote the series, oversees production, and serves as an executive producer. Debbie Allen (who also directs), Tom Werner, Reggie Rock Bythewood, Gina Prince-Bythewood, and Mandy Summers are all executive producers on the show.
Pride expressed how excited they are to be involved in the revival of the show, which holds a special place in their heart. They shared that it deeply influenced their life and they’re incredibly proud of the team’s work to create a new version of A Different World that both longtime fans and new viewers will enjoy.
Debra Allen, who directed 83 episodes of the original series, believes now is the perfect time to bring back A Different World. She explains that the original show had a significant impact, increasing enrollment at historically Black colleges and giving a voice to young Black Americans. She’s excited about the combination of new talent and returning favorites, and thinks the Netflix reboot will be unmissable.
