Okay, so I just saw the first picture of Sheridan Smith in her new movie, and it’s awesome! It’s been four years since she was last in a film. Apparently, Rebel Wilson directed it – called Girl Group – and it’s going to have its first showing at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 11th. I’m definitely checking that out!
Starring alongside Smith and Wilson is Randall Park, known for his work in Marvel films, along with Jamie-Lee O’Donnell from Derry Girls and Guz Khan of Man Like Mobeen.
The movie follows Wilson’s character, a pop star who gets dropped from her former girl group’s reunion tour. The group is portrayed by well-known singers Ashley Roberts (of The Pussycat Dolls), Mel C (from the Spice Girls), and Shaznay Lewis (of All Saints).
The first released image of the show features Wilson and Smith in costume on stage, looking every bit the glamorous pop stars they’re playing, and completely covered in sequins.

The movie follows Wilson’s character, who is sentenced to community service and decides to use the opportunity to revive his career. He does this by coaching a team of unlikely teenage girls as they prepare for an important audition with a record label.
However, she demands too much from her new team, leading her to face the harmful side of the industry that launched her career, and her own damaging patterns she can’t break.
When the movie Girl Group was revealed, executive producer Ryan Kroft explained that the classic appeal of girl groups combined with Rebel Wilson’s unique humor makes it ideal for Live Nation Studios.

The new film, Girl Group, will premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 11th. Currently, there’s no confirmed date for when it will be released in theaters.
