7 disturbing French horror movies, including this year's Infested

As a horror enthusiast with a soft spot for French cinema, I’ve been fortunate enough to explore the vast and intriguing world of French horror. The “New Extremity” movement in particular has always piqued my interest, with its transgressive films that push boundaries and spark controversy. In this article, I’d like to share some of my favorite French horror movies that are worth checking out!

Horror boasts an abundance of creativity and diversity, catering to various preferences with its many sub-genres. The allure of French horror lies in the “New Extremity” wave, characterized by provocative films designed to provoke controversy and stimulate discussions.

Based on my personal experience and exposure to various French films, I have come across some truly captivating productions that didn’t all make it onto this list. I strongly believe that these overlooked gems are just as worthy of your attention as those featured here. So, dear movie lover, I warmly invite you to explore the rich and diverse world of French cinema beyond this list!

Raw (2016)

In 2016, Julia Docournau made a big splash in the horror genre with her groundbreaking body horror film, “Raw.” The movie, starring Garance Marillier as a veterinary student, became critically acclaimed after she felt drawn to consume meat during an initiation rite. This newfound craving for meat eventually progressed to an unsettling obsession with human flesh. Equally provocative and revolting, “Raw” is a trailblazing coming-of-age tale that established Docournau as a filmmaker worth keeping an eye on.

Infested (2023)

Apartment living turns into a nightmare when an unsettling multitude of spiders invade the building, instilling fear in its inhabitants. The chilling portrayal of this arachnid infestation is what sets “Infested” apart as an effective creature movie.

For individuals with a fear of spiders (arachnophobes), be prepared: After watching “Infested,” you might feel as if something is creeping on your skin due to its convincing scares and disgustingly real moments. Following this film, Sam Raimi personally chose Sébastien Vaniček to direct one of the two upcoming “Evil Dead” projects, providing him complete creative control.

Revenge (2017)

I generally dislike the rape-revenge subgenre due to its often careless and misogynistic portrayal of women. However, Coralie Fargeat’s interpretation is unique in that it solely spotlights its female protagonist, even while retaining the brutal aspects inherent to this subgenre. The filmmaker skillfully infuses a female perspective into the narrative.

Additionally, there’s an exhilarating thrill in witnessing Jen’s evolution into a relentless seeker of vengeance. Fargeat’s upcoming movie, a feminist horror production titled “The Girl Before,” boasts Demi Moore in the lead role and has already gained significant praise.

Diabolique (1955)

“A true horror and psychological thriller classic, ‘Diabolique’ is an early masterpiece that keeps audiences on the edge of their seats. The story revolves around a partnership between a wife and her lover, driven to take drastic action against a cruel Parisian schoolmaster. His oppressive rule and mistreatment of those under his care, including his own wife, become intolerable.”

Diabolique captivates audiences with its unpredictable storyline, full of surprises that defy typical movie conventions. The film masterfully turns expectations upside down and keeps adding more twists until the very end.

Titane (2021)

As a huge fan of Ducournau’s filmmaking, I was blown away by her powerful entrance into the industry with “Raw.” Her follow-up, “Titane,” took my admiration to new heights. This audacious work showcases a captivating exploration of a sexually unconventional serial killer with an unusual affinity for cars. With Ducournau’s impressive track record from her first two films, I eagerly anticipate the mind-bending creation she will bring to life in her upcoming project, “Alpha.”

High Tension (2003)

Although it received unfavorable feedback from several critics at its debut, High Tension has since gained a significant following in the French Extremity genre and is often suggested as a hidden gem from the early 2000s film scene. With its intense gore, rapid pace, and unrelenting tension, High Tension is definitely not for those with sensitive constitutions.

Martyrs (2008)

If you enjoy the graphic violence in films like “High Tension” and “Raw,” then I strongly recommend watching “Martyrs.” This French movie is widely regarded as a representative work of the New Extremity movement. Just be sure to watch the 2008 original French version, as the 2015 American remake does not compare favorably.

The film is truly harrowing as it follows a woman’s journey of vengeance against her tormenters, who had inflicted years of abuse upon her during her childhood. Certain parts of the movie will leave an indelible mark on your memory.
