Ella Purnell has become a familiar face on television in recent years, with notable roles in shows like Yellowjackets and the hit series Fallout. Despite her success, one of her best shows, the animated adventure Star Trek: Prodigy, isn’t currently available on any streaming services, which is disappointing for fans.
Developed by Kevin and Dan Hageman, Star Trek: Prodigy was a collaboration between Paramount and Nickelodeon. The series debuted on Paramount+ in October 2021 and starred Ella Purnell as Gwyndala, Brett Grey as Dal R’El, and John Noble as the character known as the Diviner. Notably, Kate Mulgrew returned to the Star Trek universe to play both Admiral Kathryn Janeway and her holographic counterpart from Star Trek: Voyager.
In 2023, Paramount+ unexpectedly canceled Star Trek: Prodigy while the second season was still being made, and removed all episodes from its platform. Fans were upset by this decision and started a campaign to bring the show back, which ultimately led to Netflix picking up both seasons. The first season of Star Trek: Prodigy, consisting of 20 episodes, became available on Netflix in December 2023, followed by the 20 new episodes of season 2 in July 2024.
Star Trek: Prodigy Starring Ella Purnell Isn’t Streaming Anywhere
As a huge Star Trek fan, I was really disappointed to find out that Star Trek: Prodigy is no longer available on Netflix as of the end of 2025. Their 18-month deal ended, and both seasons were pulled from the service. While Netflix hasn’t shared the viewership numbers, it seems like they weren’t high enough to convince them to renew the show for a third season. It’s a shame, as I was really enjoying it!
Sadly, Star Trek: Prodigy didn’t come back to Paramount+ after leaving Netflix. Even though Paramount+ promotes itself as the main streaming home for Star Trek, Prodigy is the only series in the franchise not currently available there.
Good news for fans! You can now buy the first two seasons of Star Trek: Prodigy on Prime Video, Blu-ray, and DVD. Owning the show on physical media – like Blu-ray or DVD – is the most reliable way to ensure you always have access to it, as streaming availability can change.
It’s particularly strange that Star Trek: Prodigy isn’t available to stream, especially given its talented cast. Ella Purnell is a well-known actress with roles in popular shows like Invincible on Prime Video and Sweetpea on STARZ. And Kate Mulgrew, a Star Trek icon, has understandably expressed her frustration with how the show was handled.
Why Star Trek: Prodigy’s Treatment Is A Crime
The way Paramount+ and Netflix have handled Star Trek: Prodigy is particularly disappointing, given how good the animated series actually is. The show has received overwhelmingly positive reviews, with a 97% ‘Fresh’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes – season one scored 94%, and season two achieved a perfect 100%.
Star Trek: Prodigy aimed to attract a new generation of Star Trek fans, but it was also cleverly written and directed with enough depth to appeal to longtime viewers. Despite being labeled as a children’s animated series, adult fans who gave it a chance consistently praised the show’s quality.
Paramount+ didn’t clearly state why it canceled Star Trek: Prodigy, but it seems to have been due to low viewership and cost-cutting measures as the company prepared for a potential sale to Skydance Media. Prodigy was the first Star Trek series canceled by Paramount+, and it’s now part of a larger pattern – all Star Trek shows overseen by Alex Kurtzman have since been canceled.
Almost every other Star Trek show and movie can be streamed on Paramount+, so it’s frustrating and a mistake that Star Trek: Prodigy isn’t included. This is particularly shortsighted because Prodigy is meant to attract a new generation of Star Trek fans, something the franchise really needs.
Unfortunately, the streaming issues surrounding Star Trek: Prodigy continue, with no resolution in sight. This comes five years after Ella Purnell began her role as Gwyndala and initially approached the series with hope and positive expectations for a new Star Trek adventure.
