I recently noted Charles Hoskinson’s strong opposition to attempts to remove Section 604, especially after the National Fraternal Order of Police asked senators to rethink that particular part of the proposed legislation.

It’s about whether the people building the open-source code and the infrastructure behind cryptocurrencies could be held legally responsible for how others *use* that tech. In a letter to Senators Tim Scott and Elizabeth Warren, Patrick Yoes, president of the National Fraternal Order of Police, explained that a specific part of a bill – Section 604 – could make it harder for police to investigate and prosecute financial crimes related to cryptocurrency.

The group cautioned that excluding developers or service providers from regulations designed for money transmitters could hinder law enforcement’s ability to go after criminal organizations using cryptocurrencies.

Hoskinson firmly disagreed with that idea, calling it illogical and harmful to the process of building software.

He argues that making developers legally responsible for crimes committed by others using their software would mean open-source creators are forever liable for things they can’t control.
