WWE Saturday Night Main Event 2024 Review: Cody Rhodes BURIED Kevin Owens

WWE Saturday Night Main Event 2024 Review: Cody Rhodes BURIED Kevin Owens

As a lifelong wrestling fan and someone who has witnessed countless matches, I must say that Saturday night’s Main Event was nothing short of spectacular! From the high-flying action to the hard-hitting brawls, each match delivered in spades.

This weekend’s edition of WWE Saturday Night Main Event was held at Long Island, New York’s Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum. The event features a total of five matches in the following sequence:

Drew McIntyre vs. Sami Zayn [Personal Rivalry]

Result: Drew McIntyre (via pinfall)

In the initial stages of the fight, Sami Zayn showcased his fast-paced attack. He performed a Moonsault on Drew McIntyre outside the ring. Additionally, Zayn aimed for a Flying Crossbody outside the ring, but Drew intercepted him in mid-air and flung him over the announce table. Once back in the ring, Zayn regained momentum with a Double Axehandle from the top rope. He attempted the Helluva Kick in one corner, but Drew retaliated with a Spine Buster and Powerbomb combination, resulting in a close call for victory.

Drew put Zayn onto the top rope to deliver a White Noise, but Zayn countered with the Sunset Flip Powerbomb, which led to “This is Awesome” Chants by the New York Crowd. Drew rallied back with a Claymore attempt but Zayn countered with a Big Boot and Blue Thunder Bomb for the near fall. Zayn attempted the Helluva Kick to finish off the match, but Drew rolled out of the ring, baited Zayn to chase him back in the ring, and delivered a Claymore for the 3-count and the victory.

Main Insight/Conclusion:: 3.5 Stars (B-), This match was a strong showdown between these two standout performers, and rightfully so, Drew McIntyre emerged victorious. In an attempt to recuperate from his loss against CM Punk at Bad Blood, McIntyne’s objective is to dismantle the Original Bloodline for their past actions. To secure a bout with Roman Reigns before WrestleMania, he must first overcome Sami Zayn and the Usos of the OG Bloodline. Despite this singles defeat, Zayn can still aim for the tag team titles alongside the Usos on the path to Mania, so this loss doesn’t harm him in any way.

Liv Morgan (c) vs. Iyo Sky [World Women’s Title]

Result: Liv Morgan (via pinfall)

Iyo Sky delivered Monsault to Liv Morgan outside the ring and also delivered a Suicide Dive to Liv outside the ring. After tossing Liv back in the ring, Iyo delivered the Missile Dropkick to Liv off the springboard for the near-fall. Liv rallied back with the Codebreaker to Iyo from the top rope for the near-fall. Iyo rallied back with 3 German Suplexes to Liv for the near-fall. Liv fought back with a Monkey Flip and Enziguiri to Iyo for the near-fall. Iyo fought back with a Cross Face Submission to Iyo.

Liv escaped the hold, and Iyo swiftly delivered the Running Knee to Liv. Liv was absolutely shook from that shot and crawled to the corner turnbuckle. Iyo delivered the Double Knees to Liv in the corner and scaled the top rope. Iyo Sky went for the Moonsault to finish this match, but Liv had some life left and put her knees up to counter the Moonsault and delivered the Oblivion to Iyo for the 3-count and the victory. Rhea Ripley had a face-off with Liv Morgan after the match.

In Summary/Key Insight: 3.5 Stars (B-), This match between these two top stars was fantastic, and the right winner emerged victorious. Although Iyo Sky was once a world champion and poses a credible challenge to Liv Morgan, she lacks the storyline justification to claim the title here. The primary plot for Liv Morgan leading up to Mania is her confrontation with Rhea Ripley, who deserves the good guy’s triumph in this reign of terror. Consequently, Iyo Sky served as a temporary obstacle to boost Liv Morgan’s momentum as champion since she has suffered several non-title losses against tough opponents recently.

Gunther (c) vs. Finn Balor vs. Damian Priest [World Heavyweight Title]

Result: Gunther (via pinfall)

At the outset of the bout, Gunther executed numerous Knife Edge Cops. However, Priest took control later on, executing Tope Con Hilo on both contenders outside the ring. Akin to the Undertaker, Priest climbed the top rope and performed an Old School maneuver on Gunther. Subsequently, Priest applied Flatliner to Balor and hoisted Balor for Razor’s Edge, but Gunther impeded Priest from executing a Powerbomb. In response, Priest tried to perform Razor’s Edge on Gunther, but Balor interfered with a SlingBlade to Priest and another one to Gunther. Balor attempted a Dropkick, but Gunther countered with a Sleeper Hold.

In this wrestling match, Father Priest separated the hold and sent Balor over the ring’s edge. Gunther applied a Sleeper hold on Priest, but Priest managed to escape and performed a South of Heaven Chokeslam on Gunther for a near pin. Balor swiftly reentered the ring to strike Damian Priest with an Inverted DDT and Shotgun Dropkick. Balor climbed up the ropes with the intention of executing the Coup De Grace, but Gunther thwarted him and both wrestlers found themselves on the top rope for a Superplex. However, Priest interfered, lifting Gunther for a Razor’s Edge. In the ensuing chaos, Balor seized the opportunity to perform the Coup De Grace from the top rope onto Gunther, narrowly missing a win as Priest intervened once more.

The priest executed a move called the South of Heavens Chokeslam on Balor. However, Gunther intervened by putting the priest in a Sleeper Hold. While outside the ring, Gunther continued the hold and rolled with the priest, maintaining it until he performed a Powerbomb onto the steel steps, knocking out the priest for the rest of the match. Afterward, Gunther returned to the ring to take control. He delivered a Shotgun Dropkick to Balor and another Powerbomb, securing a 3-count victory. By exploiting the rivalry between Balor and the priest, Gunther managed to keep his title by weakening both opponents.

Key Insight/Summary: 3.5 Stars (B-), The three superstars involved in this bout delivered a strong performance, with the appropriate winner emerging. Despite previous failures against Gunther on major PPVs, Damian Priest was not set up to win here due to lack of storyline basis or momentum. Finn, being a former world champion and potential threat for Gunther, is currently a Tag Champion and does not have a compelling reason to claim the title at this time. This title match served primarily to intensify the rivalry between Balor and Priest while maintaining Gunther’s title dominance.

Chelsea Green vs. Michin [U.S. Title]

Result: Chelsea Green (via pinfall)

In simpler terms, Piper Niven was hit with a Side Slam by Piper outside the wrestling arena to aid Chelsea Green. In response, Michin retaliated against Chelsea with a Tornado DDT, coming very close to winning. However, the match continued when Michin tried an Eat Defeat, but Chelsea countered with a Rough Ryder, again coming close to victory. By mistake, Michin was accidentally targeted by Chelsea’s Suicide Dive. Seizing the opportunity, Michin took advantage and executed a Senton Bomb on both Chelsea and Piper outside the ring. Later, Michin threw Chelsea back into the ring and finished off Piper Niven with the Eat Defeat move.

In the heat of the game, I stormed towards Chelsea with the intention of wrapping it up, but she retaliated with a massive kick followed by an attempt to outshine me. I parried her move with a close call, almost securing a win as she grazed the ropes at the last possible moment. Just when the tension eased, Piper Niven tried to disrupt my focus from the apron. However, I retaliated with a powerful dropkick that sent Piper flying. Seizing the opportunity created by the distraction, Chelsea executed her signature Avalanche move from the top rope, sealing the deal for a three-count and securing the victory. And now, she wears the title as the champ.

Overall Impression/Conclusion: 3.5 Stars (B-), This match between these two stars was truly impressive and the right superstar secured the victory. Given Green’s current popularity, it seems WWE capitalized on the moment by crowning her. Green’s character development has been noteworthy so far, and it was fitting that she received a title. Booking her solely to boost the roster would not have been strategic in the long term, as this title reign could prove entertaining. This was the highlight of the night, as it has been a long time since we’ve seen such a deserving performer take the spotlight in this industry.

WWE Saturday Night Main Event 2024 Review: Cody Rhodes BURIED Kevin Owens

Cody Rhodes (c) vs. Kevin Owens [WWE Title]

Result: Cody Rhodes (via pinfall)

Cody Rhodes delivered a Suicide Dive to Kevin Owens at the start of the match. He continued the offense by delivering the Gourd Buster to KO. KO bounced back with an Orton-Esque Back Suplex to Cody on the announce table to mock Randy. KO tossed Cody back in the ring to deliver the Senton Bomb, but Cody put his knees up and delivered a Scoop PowerSlam and Disaster Kick to KO for the near fall. Cody attempted the Cody Cutter but KO rolled out of the ring, delivered a Superkick to Cody and put him on the announce table for a PowerBomb. Cody countered with a spectacular RKO.

In the heat of the game, I executed my signature move, the Cody Cutter, off the top rope right onto KO within the ring’s boundaries. I aimed high with a SuperPlex from the ropes, but KO swiftly retaliated with a Fisherman’s Buster from up there for a near-victory. He then tried to Stun me, but I smartly dodged and struck back with a Cross Rhodes Attempt. In an unexpected turn of events, KO countered again and shoved me into the referee for a classic referee knockdown. However, KO delivered the Stunner, but the referee was down. Another official sprinted to the ring just in time for a close call. Frustrated, KO went for the Pop Up Powerbomb. But I evaded it gracefully.

Cody springboarded off the ropes for the Cody Cutter but he accidentally flew into the second referee as KO ducked the attack. Since both referees were down, KO then grabbed a steel chair to attack Cody. However, Cody countered with the Cody Cutter and Cross Rhodes to KO on the steel chair for the 3-count and the victory. The plethora of Randy Orton references in this match were excellently done and made a hardcore fan think that he would be returning tonight to get involved after all of these referee bumps, but he did not show up unfortunately. Cody retained once again.

From My Perspective: I’d rate this main event a respectable 3.5 stars (B-). The clash between these two heavyweights was truly thrilling, and it’s clear the right man held onto the WWE Title. While KO played his heel role flawlessly in this storyline, it made perfect sense for Cody to emerge victorious. KO exploited Randy Orton’s vulnerable back, leaving him hospitalized and practically incapacitated. Randy has been more than just a fellow wrestler to Cody – he’s been a mentor, someone who holds a special place in his heart. With the bond between them, it’s understandable that Cody can’t let KO’s actions towards Randy go unchecked, even if diplomacy is his usual approach.
