Writer of Star Trek: The Next Generation's "Inner Light" is developing new sci-fi show

As a lifelong Star Trek enthusiast with a soft spot for thought-provoking narratives, I am beyond thrilled about Morgan Gendel’s new creation, “Isolation.” Having penned some of the most memorable episodes from The Next Generation and Deep Space Nine, his unique ability to weave complex, emotionally resonant stories is well documented. His upcoming eco-thriller series promises to be a fresh take on the genre, with an ensemble of characters grappling with climate change while encountering an alien force capable of mind manipulation.

Known as one of Star Trek: The Next Generation’s top episodes and Patrick Stewart’s favorite, “The Inner Light” received a Hugo Award and continues to be featured on most lists of must-watch Generations episodes. The scriptwriter, Morgan Gendel, struck gold with this episode, and he has now signed a deal with the Welsh broadcaster S4C to create a new eco-thriller science fiction series called Isolation, which is currently in development. Little is understood about this series other than it features a group of characters striving to combat climate change, who will encounter an extraterrestrial force capable of influencing human minds. This plotline seems reminiscent of Star Trek, which isn’t surprising given its origins. Interestingly, Gendel has previously contributed to Star Trek: The Next Generation with the well-received episode “Starship Mine” and two episodes for Star Trek: Deep Space Nine titled “The Passenger” and “Armageddon Game.

Though Gendel admits there is a “whole Inner Light kind of linkage” in this new series, in an interview with Inverse, he pointed out that “[Isolation] is a vastly different show than anything I’ve worked on, with a right-here-right-now vibe. Its end-of-the-world stakes are directly tied to the struggle to tame climate change.”

In simpler terms, the author mentioned that his work frequently creates an intense situation for individuals, forcing emotions or hidden truths to surface. Given his past works like Star Trek episodes, we anticipate similar intensity in the upcoming series titled Isolation.

As I type this, details about the upcoming game “Isolation” are scarce, which means no release date has been announced yet. Fingers crossed that we get more information soon because, from what I’ve heard so far, it seems like a game any Trekkie would love, especially given who the creator is!
