With lots of loot and focused levels and missions, Soulslike RPG The First Berserker: Khazan is giving me all the right Nioh vibes: “Players aren’t required to grind to farm for decent items and make progress”
In terms of loot and progression, Khazan appears to draw more influence from Team Ninja rather than FromSoftware.
A fresh soulslike title, The First Berserker: Khazan, is set to debut this month, and it’s sparked discussions comparing it to FromSoftware’s lineup (notably Bloodborne and Sekiro). While many liken it to these games, I personally find its essence more akin to Team Ninja’s approach in the genre, with Nioh and Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin standing out as particular examples. This similarity seems even stronger based on the Steam Next Fest demo, and according to the game’s director, these Nioh-like qualities are further emphasized in the complete game.
In an interview with GamesRadar+, Junho Lee explained that each stage of the game follows a story-driven, mission-based structure, unlike the singular world of Dark Souls where you explore freely. Instead, you’ll navigate through one level, encounter bosses who’ll repeatedly knock you down until you defeat them, and then move on to another mission.
Additionally, there’s another similarity between this game and Nioh: the method in which weapon drops are handled seems to have been borrowed directly from Team Ninja’s playbook as well. In the demo, various types of weapons and armor, each with distinct stats and bonuses, can be found – whether they come from defeated enemies or hidden items.
In this game, there may be an unpredictable aspect that could raise concerns, similar to other games where weapons are randomly obtained, which can be frustrating when you’re looking for something powerful (like Destiny). However, Lee assures us that players won’t have to grind excessively to gather good items and advance in the game. Instead, they can choose to refine their playstyle by farming for specific set items or enhancing their build using different systems as they reach higher levels. Keep in mind though, that according to Lee, a full set of equipment is likely to be replaced after each main mission.
