Wicked fans won’t want to hear what Cynthia Erivo has said about a third movie

Despite not receiving any Oscar nominations, Wicked: For Good earned over $500 million around the world. When combined with the earnings of the first Wicked film, the movie adaptations have made a total of $1.3 billion globally. Because of this success, Universal Pictures is already planning another film to continue the story.

I’m a huge fan of ‘Wicked,’ so I was really hoping to hear about a sequel, but it doesn’t sound like Cynthia Erivo is convinced we’ll be going back to Oz anytime soon. She recently told Variety that it’s way too early to even talk about it, and she’d need a really compelling reason to return – the story would have to be good enough to make it worthwhile.

Cynthia Erivo gained widespread recognition after starring in films like Harriet, Bad Times at the El Royale, and Drift, and her recent work on the Wicked movies has further boosted her profile. She continues to be in demand, with upcoming projects including Prima Facie, based on the acclaimed play starring Jodie Comer, and The Road Home.

Erivo has been incredibly busy performing all 23 roles in her one-woman show of Dracula in London’s West End, and it’s finishing up this weekend. So, it’s understandable she hasn’t had much time to think about Wicked: For Good and everything involved with it.

I haven’t really had time to reflect on it much, and I suppose I haven’t felt the need to, because time often softens difficult memories,” she told Variety.

Cynthia Erivo has a fond memory of discussing a particular outfit from Wicked: For Good – the ‘sex cardigan’ Elphaba wears during a scene with Fiyero, played by Jonathan Bailey, before he transforms into the Scarecrow. The outfit sparked a lot of conversation.

We’d often discussed how we could play these characters as straight, even though we, as actors, are queer, and still authentically portray a loving and intimate relationship. It felt like a really unique opportunity to do that.

After Cynthia Erivo wasn’t nominated for an Oscar, her co-star Ariana Grande praised her performance as consistently excellent, even though many viewers felt it deserved more recognition in both films.

As a huge Wicked fan, I have to say Cynthia’s Elphaba is just breathtaking. It’s the most honest, raw, and powerful portrayal I’ve ever seen, and I truly believe people will be talking about it and loving it for years to come. It’s a performance that will really stick with you, and no one can take that away.
