Be warned, this article contains spoilers for Star Wars: Shadow of Maul issues #1-3! Before watching season 2 of Maul – Shadow Lord, Star Wars fans should definitely read the first season’s prequel comic series. The ongoing Marvel comic, Star Wars: Shadow of Maul, provides a thrilling backstory for the Disney+ animated show, detailing how Maul built his criminal organization on Janix and exploring the history of Captain Brander Lawson before Maul became a major power player.
This new prequel story adds depth and detail to the world of Shadow Lord, especially the recent issue written by Benjamin Percy and illustrated by Madibek Musabekov. It shows Lawson dealing with both dishonest police officers and powerful crime bosses, while also revealing how Maul secretly prepared for his initial attack – an event that was first seen in the premiere episode of Shadow Lord.
Marvel’s Shadow of Maul Series Sets Up Disney+ Series In Some Very Cool Ways
The Shadow of Maul comic isn’t just about following Darth Maul; it focuses on the criminal world of Janix and the people trying to combat it. A key character is Brander Lawson, a rare honest police officer in a city riddled with corruption. In the latest issue, Shadow of Maul #3, Lawson is determined to deliver justice, even if it means straining his relationship with his son, Rylee, while navigating corrupt officials and powerful crime gangs.
This new Star Wars series is also fleshing out the characters of Looti Vario and Nico Deemis, powerful crime bosses on the planet Janix. Darth Maul targets them in the early episodes of Shadow Lord as he seeks retribution against those who turned on him after the Clone Wars ended.
In Shadow of Maul, the story shows the former Sith Lord slowly establishing his base of operations within the city’s underbelly. The prequel details Maul’s initial arrival on Janix and his use of intimidation to gather information from the local police, which he needs to launch his first attacks against Deemis and Vario.
Will Marvel Do A Prequel Series For Maul – Shadow Lord Season 2?
Now that season one of Maul – Shadow Lord is finished, it would be great if Marvel Comics released another comic book to lead into the already announced season two.
Following a fierce fight with Darth Vader, Maul finds himself completely alone, having lost many of his closest followers. But he did achieve one key objective: after Vader killed her mentor, Eeko-Dio Daki, Maul took on Jedi survivor Devon Izara as his new apprentice. Driven by a desire for revenge, Devon begins training in the dark side under Maul, setting the stage for an exciting second season of Shadow Lord.
It would be really interesting to see a comic series that leads into season two, showing how Maul begins training Devon during the difficult times ahead. Would Maul try a new approach to teaching, or would he revert to the harsh, painful methods his own master, Darth Sidious, used on him when he was young?
Lucasfilm has clearly demonstrated that fans still love stories about Darth Maul, no matter how they’re told. Similar to how the Shadow of Maul comic is adding depth to the first season of Shadow Lord, many are hoping for a similar series of stories to build anticipation for the upcoming second season.
Star Wars: Shadow of Maul #3 is on sale now from Marvel Comics.
