Jake Gyllenhaal’s $178M Western Officially Releases On Hulu Next Week After Making 11x Its Budget

Jake Gyllenhaal started acting very young, appearing in the film City Slickers when he was just 11 years old. He’s since become a prominent actor in Hollywood, known for roles in movies like October Sky, Source Code, Prisoners, Nightcrawler, and Spider-Man: Far From Home. His recent work includes The Bride! and In the Grey, with The Bride! being directed by his sister, Maggie Gyllenhaal.

The 2000s were a pivotal period for Jake Gyllenhaal, with memorable roles in films like Donnie Darko, Jarhead, and Zodiac establishing him as a promising actor. One film, in particular, brought him significant awards and was a huge financial success, earning eleven times its production cost. Starting next week, this highly-rated Western will be available for streaming on Hulu.

Hulu is adding a bunch of popular movies to its streaming library on June 1st, including Brokeback Mountain, all three Captain America films, Catch Me If You Can, Gladiator, Lincoln, and Talladega Nights: The Ballad Of Ricky Bobby. Brokeback Mountain is joining Hulu just six months after its 20th anniversary.

The 2005 film Brokeback Mountain is based on Annie Proulx’s 1997 short story of the same name. Directed by Ang Lee and written by Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana, the Western tells the complex love story of two cowboys, Jack Twist (Jake Gyllenhaal) and Ennis Del Mar (Heath Ledger), over two decades, from 1963 to 1983. The film also stars Randy Quaid, Michelle Williams (who began a relationship with Heath Ledger while filming), and Anne Hathaway.

Despite a relatively small $14 million budget, Brokeback Mountain earned over $174 million worldwide when it was released in theaters in late 2005 and early 2006. This financial success was matched by widespread critical acclaim. The film received an 88% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, and audiences gave it an 82% score.

Let’s talk awards! Brokeback Mountain really made a splash during awards season. At the Golden Globes, it took home four wins – including Best Dramatic Film and Best Director – and racked up three additional nominations. Then came the Oscars, where it won three, again including Best Director, and was up for Best Picture along with five other categories. It was exciting to see Gyllenhaal, Ledger, and Williams all in the running for their performances too.

Even after two decades, Brokeback Mountain is still a famous and highly-regarded LGBTQ+ film, often considered one of the best of the 21st century. In 2018, the Library of Congress chose it for preservation in the National Film Registry because of its cultural and historical importance. Now, those who want to watch or re-watch it can stream it on Hulu starting in June.

Jake Gyllenhaal’s upcoming projects include the thriller Remain, set to release in theaters on February 5, 2027. He’s currently filming the comedy-drama Honeymoon with Harry, and will also return as former UFC fighter Dalton in Road House 2.
