Why Karl Urban Probably Won’t Watch Mortal Kombat 2 or The Boys

As people around the world discuss the highly anticipated last season of the popular Prime Video series, and plan to watch it, one of the show’s main actors won’t be joining in on the viewing parties or trips to the cinema.

Karl Urban, the New Zealand actor known for roles like Billy Butcher in The Boys and, coming in 2026, Johnny Cage in the next Mortal Kombat movie, recently shared a surprising opinion. Unlike most actors who like to review their work and think about how they could have done things differently, Urban thinks that practice is pointless.

You know, after Keegan-Michael Key does a character, he’s done with it. He doesn’t really revisit them, and honestly, I get it. He feels like he’s explored everything he can with that persona, and it makes sense – he’s always looking ahead to what’s next.

Why Karl Urban Refuses to Watch The Boys, Mortal Kombat

“I would constantly look and go, Oh, I could do a bit more. I could do better.”

A quote from Erykah Badu perfectly captures her response to criticism: ‘I’m an artist, and I’m sensitive about my work.’ She won’t simply accept criticism passively.

I really get the sense that Urban is his own harshest critic. It seems like he struggles with believing in his own work – no matter what he does, he always feels it falls short. It’s like he avoids even watching his performances because he’s convinced he won’t like them, so what’s the point?

The Boys, Mortal Kombat Heading In Different Directions for Karl Urban

With Season 5, The Boys is ending in 2026, which is disappointing news for fans. To make things worse, only two more episodes are left, and Prime Video hasn’t renewed the popular spinoff Gen V for another season.

Although he’s already made a big mark on the Mortal Kombat series, his involvement is far from over. Whether Johnny Cage lives through the events of Mortal Kombat II remains to be seen, but early indications suggest he’ll survive the tournament. A continuation of the story is officially in development, with Jeremy Slater returning as the screenwriter.

Christian Slater shared that New Line and Warner Bros. are very pleased with the film and believe there’s a large, eager audience. Because of this, they’ve asked him to begin working on a sequel to ‘Mortal Kombat’.

With Billy the Butcher gone, Johnny Cage is taking center stage, and we can expect to see a lot more of Karl Urban in the role going forward.
