Where do Aegon and Larys go at the end of the House of the Dragon season 2 finale?
As a gamer with over two decades of binge-watching epic tales under my belt, I must say that the conclusion of House of the Dragon season 2 has left me feeling like a dragon with a sore claw – a bit bruised but still ready to roar! The pacing issues and deviations from George R.R. Martin’s original story have been a bone of contention for many, including myself.
We’ve recently completed season 2 of “House of the Dragon,” and fans, predictably, have expressed passionate views! Due to issues like uneven pacing and some controversial adaptations from the source material, this season has received more negative feedback compared to the first. I can certainly understand the criticism. The finale is packed with numerous storylines that aim to provide a conclusive and enjoyable ending, but it also includes scenes exclusive to the show and alterations in the sequence of events.
WARNING: Major spoilers for House of the Dragon season 2 episode 8 and Fire & Blood are below.
In the final episode of season 2, events from the seventh episode carry over immediately, as Aemond’s mental state deteriorates following Rhaenyra’s selection of new dragon riders. Early in this installment, Larys pays a visit to Aegon, who is recovering from an illness. This time, however, Larys isn’t just there for routine check-ups; he informs Aegon about significant developments: Rhaenyra has assembled new dragon riders, Aemond has torched Sharp Point, and Larys fears for Aegon’s safety. Despite my doubts about Larys’ intentions towards Aegon, it’s evident that he wants to protect him.
Larys advises Aegon to leave King’s Landing urgently, as he fears Aemond might attempt to harm him. Aegon, being the king, questions why he should be the one to depart, but Larys argues that it’s for his own safety. He describes Aemond as unpredictable and suggests they could use some time away from the city. To ensure their comfort during this period, Larys reveals he has funds stored at the Iron Bank of Braavos. If Rhaenyra and Aemond engage in a fierce conflict, and both their forces are weakened, Larys explains, Aegon can reclaim his position on the Iron Throne. In this scenario, Larys refers to Aegon as “Aegon the Rebuilder,” and Aegon appears to consider his suggestion.
At the conclusion of the episode, Aegon and Larys reappear; they’ve escaped the castle and are hidden among animals in a carriage. We only catch a brief sight of them during a concluding sequence, but it becomes clear that Aegon is no longer in King’s Landing. But where are they headed next? Larys hints at having funds with the Iron Bank, suggesting a stop in Braavos might be on the cards. However, their ultimate destination remains unclear – could Braavos just be a pitstop, or is it their secret hideout? Interestingly, in the book, Aegon actually conceals himself on Dragonstone, an unexpected choice given that it’s his sister’s island. The book implies that few would suspect to find Aegon hiding on such a location.
In the novel, it isn’t until after King’s Landing falls and Rhaenyra reclaims the Iron Throne that her supporters become aware that Aegon has secretly left with his children Maelor and Jaehaera. The location of their departure remains unknown until Rhaenyra encounters him at Dragonstone. It is then revealed in “Fire & Blood” where he had been hiding. While Maelor and Jaehaera are placed under the care of others, Aegon resides with a bastard knight, disguised as a common man dressed like a fisherman. It isn’t until Sunfyre (who may not have perished in “House of the Dragon”) flies to Dragonstone that Aegon appears to challenge Rhaenyra.
In the series “House of the Dragon”, it remains undisclosed whether Larys will take Aegon to Dragonstone after a brief stop at the Iron Bank, or if their destination is actually Braavos instead. Given the creative liberties taken by the show’s writers with the original source material, I am curious about how they plan to develop Aegon’s storyline in future episodes. Tom Glynn-Carney has delivered a stellar performance this season, so I hope the writers continue to make good use of his talents and avoid compromising his character as the series progresses into seasons 3 and beyond.
