AI commerce will likely waltz down the familiar corridors of Visa first, while crypto protocols linger behind like that polite guest nobody can quite ignore.
On April 8 in San Francisco, Visa premiered Intelligent Commerce Connect, a payments infrastructure marvel that allows AI agents to discover goods, initiate checkout, and complete purchases. Yes, your future shopping companion might just be a machine, but Visa insists it will do so with impeccable taste.
The product charms merchants through a single integration on the Visa Acceptance Platform, handling secure payments, tokenization, spend controls, and authentication. It even plays nicely with protocols such as Trusted Agent, Machine Payments, Agentic Commerce, and Universal Commerce-because nothing says “modern elegance” like a protocol bouquet.
Why does it matter? Darling, the real question isn’t whether AI will shop-it’s who will own the checkout when it does. Visa is betting that humans trust familiar payment rails more than stand-alone crypto gizmos that look like they belong in a hacker’s lair.
Trust is the moat
Visa’s survey paints a picture: 53% of business leaders are game for AI-to-AI negotiation, 71% will tailor products for AI, 77% already dabble with AI, while consumers tiptoe with 58% comfortable comparing prices, 55% with applying discounts, 38% with letting AI buy things, and a mere 27% willing to surrender unrestricted spending. My, what a genteel caution!
“Intelligent Commerce Connect brings our trusted payment magic into the brave new world of AI-driven commerce,” intoned Andrew Torre, Visa’s president of value-added services, as if announcing the debutante ball of AI shopping. Businesses can now let AI agents purchase “securely and at scale,” which is a polite way of saying, “let the machines do the heavy lifting, darlings.”
This extends Visa’s dalliance with AI that began last year, partnering with the crème de la crème: OpenAI, Microsoft, Anthropic, IBM, Perplexity, and Stripe-all dedicated to building shopping tools with user-set guardrails. Safety first, elegance always.
Crypto stays in the stack
Fear not, dear blockchain aficionados: crypto isn’t extinct, just relegated to the plumbing. Nevermined’s integration with Visa Intelligent Commerce and Coinbase’s x402 allows AI agents to autonomously buy digital goods while merchants still see the dollars-or coins-flowing in their accounts.
“Agentic commerce must be secure by design,” warned Tanner Riche, Visa VP of AI partnerships, while Erik Reppel of x402 chimed in about open standards and processed payments. Yes, $24 million over 30 days is what passes for a polite tip in this game.
So, whether it’s Coinbase’s Agentic Wallets, Visa-backed stablecoins, or Ethereum and Solana quietly hoping for AI attention, the future looks sophisticated, automated, and, naturally, just a touch cheeky.
