Netflix has recently added the 2003 historical film The Last Samurai, starring Tom Cruise and Timothy Spall. The movie, directed by Edward Zwick, is a sweeping drama based on true events. It follows Captain Nathan Algren, played by Cruise, as he travels to Japan in 1876 to train the country’s first modern army for the new Meiji government.
The movie, written by Zwick along with John Logan and Marshall Herskovitz, is inspired by the real events of the Satsuma Rebellion, a historical uprising that occurred nine years after the start of the Meiji period in Japan.
Tom Cruise stars as the Last Samurai alongside Ken Watanabe, who plays Lord Moritsugu Katsumoto. The film also features Koyuki as Katsumoto’s sister, Taka, Shin Koyamada as Nobutada Katsumoto, Tony Goldwyn as the harsh Colonel Bagley, and Hiroyuki Sanada as the skilled swordsman Ujio. Timothy Spall plays Simon Graham, a photographer and interpreter for Algren.

Released in December, the movie became a major box office success in 2003. It earned four Academy Award nominations, including one for Watanabe as Best Supporting Actor, but critics were divided, giving it a 65% rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 216 reviews. Some viewers also criticized aspects of the film’s portrayal of characters and its reliance on a ‘white savior’ storyline.
CNN.com praised the movie as a grand and exciting adventure, highlighting Tom Cruise’s impressive performance as Captain Nathan Algren. The Arizona Republic described it as a strong and well-made historical drama.
In a review, The New York Times described the film as inconsistent, noting that it conveyed emotions more powerfully in large-scale scenes than in quieter, more personal moments.

In a review of The Last Samurai, The Washington Post criticized its storyline as a predictable ‘white savior’ narrative, calling it a well-intentioned but ultimately simplistic and preachy story about a Westerner learning lessons in another culture.
Netflix recently added several acclaimed films to its streaming library, including The Last Samurai, A History of Violence (with Viggo Mortensen, Ed Harris, and Maria Bello), and Ben Affleck’s 2012 film Argo.
Netflix also features the film Sully, a biographical drama starring Tom Hanks. It tells the true story of Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger, the pilot who heroically landed a US Airways flight on the Hudson River in 2009, saving all 155 people on board.
