These Games Are Better Than Skyrim (In One Area)

Summary

  • The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered offers visually upgraded environments in Cyrodiil.
  • Elden Ring provides a challenging RPG experience with huge open-world exploration.
  • The Outer Worlds stands out for its decision-making and storytelling depth in a sci-fi RPG setting.

For over ten years following its debut in 2011, “The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim” remains a popular topic when discussing the best open-world role-playing games of all time. The game’s immersive world and enjoyable gameplay continue to captivate players, while updates through downloadable content, fan-made mods, and reissues have enhanced its visuals, audio, and content. It paved the way for other RPGs to emulate or surpass its excellence.

Games ranging from magical fantasies to futuristic thrillers have emerged both before and after Skyrim, frequently surpassing its offerings. Although Skyrim remains worthy of the adoration it still garners today, other games in a similar vein – some even developed by the same team responsible for The Elder Scrolls series – should also be acknowledged for their achievements.

8. The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered

The Open World Is More Appealing To The Eyes

In numerous aspects, many gamers believe that “The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim” is the superior game. However, when it comes to environment design, its predecessor and the 2025 remaster, “The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered“, excel. This updated version offers a more visually appealing depiction of Cyrodiil, the Imperial capital nation.

As I delved into the original “Oblivion,” the gaming universe unveiled an expansive and breathtaking realm for me to traverse. The vibrant hues of Cyrodiil took my breath away, with its coastal landscapes adorned with lush green fields, towering trees, inviting beaches, and idyllic towns reminiscent of a Renaissance fair. And let’s not forget the thrill of venturing into the very heart of Oblivion to confront the malevolent Daedra in their own infernal domains.

7. Elden Ring

FromSoftware Made One Of The Hardest RPGs Ever

In a novel departure for FromSoftware, Elden Ring represents their initial exploration into an expansive open-world setting, drawing upon their acclaimed RPG series such as Dark Souls and Bloodborne. This game offers a test of endurance for players, complete with boss battles that can stretch on for extended periods. Distinctively, Elden Ring pushes the boundaries of its predecessors by providing a colossal open world teeming with additional bosses, each presenting challenges comparable to those found in the main narrative.

In the game Skyrim, players face tough challenges like battling dragons reminiscent of Dark Souls boss fights. However, if you’re looking for an RPG that offers a more rigorous test of your agility and skills, you might find a more satisfying journey in Elden Ring. Furthermore, Elden Ring weaves a darker storyline, combining aspects of Norse and Japanese mythologies to create a compelling narrative.

6. Cyberpunk 2077

It’s Easier To Travel And Feel Immersed In The Future

In the spirit of iconic science fiction tales such as “Blade Runner” and “RoboCop,” the game Cyberpunk 2077 invites players to dive into the lively yet turbulent environment of Night City – a futuristic metropolis teeming with crime and deceit. This sprawling, bustling city offers a wealth of content, prompting players to explore extensively in order to find particular destinations for RPG quests, interactions, and occurrences.

In the cyberpunk world of Cyberpunk 2077, an abundance of cars and motorcycles gracefully navigate the cityscape. Although quick-travel is an option, the lively atmosphere of Night City encourages players to explore its gritty yet vibrant settings, which seem to pulse with life when traversed by a well-chosen vehicle.

5. Dragon Age: Inquisition

Character Creation Is Still A Major Highlight

Over time, just a few years can bring about remarkable changes, as demonstrated by BioWare’s Dragon Age: Inquisition. This game has grown to be nearly as well-known as Skyrim since its release. From its distinctive narrative and dialogue choices to its thrilling gameplay, BioWare created an unforgettable third installment in their fantasy series with the same commitment they put into Mass Effect.

Speaking about “Dragon Age: Inquisition,” its character creator is incredibly detailed and deserves recognition. Compared to “The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim” – which has an impressive character creator on its own, especially with mods – the visual style and attention to detail in “Dragon Age: Inquisition” makes it stand out. Players can easily spend hours designing their ideal human, Elf, Qunari, or Dwarf character.

4. The Legend Of Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom

Hyrule Has Never Been Bigger

The allure of open-world RPGs like “The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim” lies in their ability to let you traverse a realm filled with swords and magic. True to form, it offered just that. “Skyrim” boasts an expansive map teeming with undiscovered mysteries and dungeons, providing enough content to captivate players for hundreds of hours. Interestingly, Nintendo has also created something comparable with “The Legend Of Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom“.

In the follow-up to The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild, titled Tears Of The Kingdom, Hyrule undergoes further expansion with added floating islands suspended among clouds and cavernous depths beneath for exploration. Similar to its predecessor, if a player can spot it, they can likely travel there, resulting in one of the largest games ever crafted, as more destinations become accessible.

3. The Outer Worlds

Decisions Matter In This Space RPG

In my gaming adventures, I’ve found myself increasingly captivated by the impact of choices. Games like The Outer Worlds, crafted by the brilliant minds at Obsidian Entertainment (the folks who brought us Fallout: New Vegas), let me shape the narrative with a single decision during a quest or in a conversation with a character. It’s quite thrilling to see how my choices unfold and alter the game’s storyline!

In addition to being an engrossing first-person shooter role-playing game, boasting stunning visuals of alien planets governed by corporations, the impact of every decision you make, whether big or small, is significant. Crafting your character with their unique abilities and backstory significantly influences both gameplay and storyline, thereby solidifying The Outer Worlds as a standout sci-fi RPG experience.

2. Fallout 4

Bethesda Took Voice Acting To Another Level

After achieving tremendous success with Skyrim, Bethesda created the next installment in the related series, namely Fallout 4. This game revolves around a solitary survivor who observed the bombs detonate and entered cryosleep. Several enhancements made to Skyrim were blended into Fallout 4, showing up in both subtle and noticeable manners.

In my gaming world, Fallout 4 brings a breath of fresh air with its diverse cast. Instead of just one face behind all the NPCs like in previous games, this time around there are multiple actors lending their voices. And This is the first time in the series that we have a fully voiced protagonist. This means less repetition of voices and when it does happen, the same actor switches things up by using different tones or accents to make each character unique and memorable.

1. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

Geralt Has Better Stories Than The Dragonborn

It’s no wonder that, being derived from a well-known series of fantasy books, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt shines in storytelling. The game centers around Geralt of Rivia, who is on a mission to locate his apprentice and adopted daughter, Ciri. She is pursued by several groups, among them the Wild Hunt, and Geralt races against time to reach her before they manage to capture her.

As a gamer, diving into the gritty fantasy realm of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, I’ve come to realize that the main narrative is just the tip of the iceberg. This game is brimming with extensive expansions that add layers upon layers to the story. Even what might appear as straightforward contracts for Geralt can unexpectedly blossom into intricate and heart-wrenching narratives. It’s these elements that create a world teeming with unforgettable monsters, characters, and experiences.
