Based on Homer’s classic Greek poem, The Odyssey tells the story of Odysseus’s dangerous ten-year trip back to his home in Ithaca after the Trojan War. Along the way, he encounters numerous challenges, including battles with legendary monsters like Polyphemus, Charybdis, and the six-headed Scylla. Director Christopher Nolan has brought this epic tale to life on the big screen with a truly immersive cinematic experience, filming the entire movie with IMAX cameras and giving it a runtime that matches the scale of the story.
Director Christopher Nolan is famous for making epic, high-budget films that often deal with complicated ideas and play with time. His latest movie, Oppenheimer, is his longest yet, running exactly three hours. This beats out Interstellar (2 hours and 49 minutes) and The Dark Knight Rises (2 hours and 44 minutes). These longer runtimes allow him to tell very detailed and sprawling stories, and people are now wondering how long his upcoming film, The Odyssey, will be, considering it will cover a ten-year journey.
A 2024 survey revealed most people think a movie’s ideal length is around 92 minutes. Out of 2,000 participants, only 2% (40 people) preferred films longer than two and a half hours, and just 15% (300 people) enjoyed movies exceeding two hours. This suggests that while studios often make long, blockbuster-style films, most viewers actually prefer shorter, more concise stories. Despite this, audiences still go to see longer movies – many of the biggest box office hits, like Avatar and Avengers: Endgame, are over three hours long.
Even though Oppenheimer was a long movie, it was a huge hit, earning over $975 million worldwide. Now, audiences are anticipating similar success for The Odyssey, which is expected to be a major film event this year. However, The Odyssey won’t require quite as much time commitment – the runtime for Christopher Nolan’s adaptation, starring Matt Damon, is confirmed to be under three hours, according to Deadline. Producer Emma Thomas has assured fans that, despite the film still being edited, it will definitely stay under that three-hour limit.
This is a developing story…
