Season 3 will feature the return of the terrifying Nazgûl. These Ringwraiths, also known as “Ring-servants,” will appear in future seasons of the Prime Video series set during Middle-earth’s Second Age.
Empire Magazine has confirmed that Zubin Varla will be portraying characters who transform into the Nazgûl. Varla explains their journey is similar to Gollum’s, highlighting a cycle of escalating evil and violence. He describes how their bodies and souls are gradually corrupted, becoming almost empty and losing their physical substance.
The Ringwraiths Come to Rings of Power Season 3
The Ringwraiths (Nazgûl) are expected to play a major role in Season 3 of The Rings of Power, particularly as Sauron is now openly revealed. According to co-showrunner J.D. Payne, those fighting for the dark side don’t see themselves as villains – each believes they’re doing what’s right.
According to Payne, each character sees themselves as the hero of their own journey. For example, Khamûl believes he’s a rightful king whose power was stolen, and Sauron promises to help him reclaim it.
Who is Khamûl the Easterling in The Lord of the Rings?
Khamûl, an Easterling known as “The Shadow of the East,” rose to become one of the most powerful Ringwraiths, second only to the Witch-king of Angmar. He was originally a man of status who received a ring from Sauron, which gave him power but ultimately consumed his life, transforming him into a Nazgûl.
Khamûl was a powerful Ringwraith who later commanded Dol Goldur, the fortress once used by Sauron when he pretended to be the Necromancer. After Gollum vanished, Khamûl went to the Shire, questioning the Gaffer about the “Baggins” family. He then led the hunt for Frodo and the other Hobbits as they traveled from the Shire to Bree and ultimately Rivendell.
Khamûl isn’t the only important character from Middle-earth appearing in the third season of The Rings of Power. Prime Video also announced earlier this week that another previously unseen character will be introduced.
Season 3 of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power jumps ahead in time after the events of Season 2, focusing on the peak of the war between the Elves and Sauron. Sauron is actively trying to create the One Ring, hoping it will give him the power to dominate Middle-earth and control everyone who lives there.
