Hulu is creating a TV series based on a little-known but beloved film starring Jim Carrey. The actors who will be in the show have also been announced.
I’m so excited to hear that Natasha Rothwell – you might know her from The White Lotus and How to Die Alone – is joining the cast of Hulu’s upcoming reboot of Cable Guy! It doesn’t have a title yet, but she’ll be acting alongside Jake Johnson (Minx) and Damon Wayans Jr. (Poppa’s House), who were fantastic together in New Girl. Natasha will play Gina, Steven Stephens’ sister (played by Wayans), and from what I understand, she’s going to be a really funny, quirky character with a bit of an edge – she’s living back at home after being injured.
The Cable Guy Is Reimagined for the Streaming Age
The new series follows Chip Douglas (Jake Johnson), a cable technician feeling lost in today’s world of streaming and endless entertainment. His life changes when he gets a service call from Steven Stephens (Damon Wayans Jr.), a childhood friend he thought he’d lost touch with. Their reconnection gives both men what they’ve been lacking—but Chip’s eagerness might cause problems.
Dwayne Johnson and Marlon Wayans are starring in and also producing the show. Rob Rosell, Joe Piarulli, and Luan Thomas wrote the pilot episode and are co-running the series. Neal H. Moritz and Pavun Shetty are also producing. Sony Pictures Television is the studio behind the reboot.
Jake Johnson Will Play a New Version of Chip Douglas
For the show’s first episode, Johnson will play the role originally made famous by Jim Carrey. In the original film, Carrey played Chip Douglas, a character who used many different names as the “Cable Guy.” Matthew Broderick played Steven Kovacs, a man who recently went through a breakup and asks Carrey’s character to set up his cable. Steven initially accepts free cable and a friendship with Chip, but things quickly become unsettling as the Cable Guy becomes overly attached to him.
Lou Holtz Jr. wrote and Ben Stiller directed The Cable Guy. Fresh off hits like Dumb and Dumber and Ace Ventura, Jim Carrey earned $20 million for his role. The film cost around $50 million to make, which meant it technically broke even, but didn’t perform as well as his previous comedies. Critics had mixed reactions, mainly because Carrey delivered a darker, more unsettling performance than audiences expected. Despite this, the movie gained a dedicated cult following, and many of Carrey’s fans now consider it to be .
A premiere date hasn’t been set for Hulu’s untitled Cable Guy reboot at this time.
