The MCU Can Fix Its Biggest Shang-Chi Sequel Mistake

Rumors are circulating about a new team of superheroes coming to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and it could finally address the long-awaited follow-up to Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Director Destin Daniel Cretton joined Marvel Studios in 2021 to bring Simu Liu into the MCU as Shang-Chi, the Master of Kung Fu. Despite the film’s release, fans have been waiting for over five years to see Shang-Chi return for another adventure.

Shang-Chi’s first movie saw him join forces with his close friend Katy and his sister, Xialing, to fight their father, Wenwu, who had been influenced by a powerful evil force. Although Wenwu made a sacrifice and left something behind, Marvel hasn’t focused much on Shang-Chi since. However, a recent rumor suggests a great way to bring the character back with a compelling story.

Shang-Chi 2 Is the Perfect Place to Debut the MCU’s Agents of Atlas

There’s growing excitement that Marvel Studios might introduce the Agents of Atlas into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and a sequel to Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings seems like the ideal opportunity. While director Destin Daniel Cretton and star Simu Liu have confirmed a sequel is in development, a release date hasn’t been announced. Whenever it arrives, the Agents of Atlas would be a welcome and exciting addition to the team.

The Agents of Atlas team originally appeared in Marvel Comics. They were recently reimagined in 2019’s War of the Realms storyline, with Jimmy Woo assembling a new team of Asian and Asian American superheroes. This updated version of the Agents of Atlas would be a great fit for a Shang-Chi 2 movie. The first Shang-Chi film introduced several powerful Asian heroes to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and a sequel could further explore their stories and team dynamics.

Shang-Chi might team up with a diverse group of Asian and Asian-American heroes, including Aero, who controls the wind, the Hulk-like Amadeus Cho, Crescent and her magical bear Io, K-pop star-turned-superhero Luna Snow, spider-powered Silk, water manipulator Wave, and the shapeshifting White Fox. Several other Asian heroes already established in the Marvel Cinematic Universe could also join, and Destin Daniel Cretton is poised to direct them all.

Introducing the Agents of Atlas Can Repair Marvel’s Major Shang-Chi Mistake

When Shang-Chi joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2021, he immediately stood out as a promising and powerful hero. However, Marvel hasn’t really built on that potential. Despite his strong introduction, the character has largely disappeared in the years since, and we haven’t seen him interact with other heroes like Wong, Bruce Banner, or Carol Danvers after his initial appearance.

While Simu Liu reprised his role as Shang-Chi for a few episodes of the animated What If…? series, the character hasn’t appeared in any live-action Marvel Cinematic Universe films or shows recently. Many fans believe Marvel has overlooked Shang-Chi for the past five years, but introducing the Agents of Atlas in a potential Shang-Chi 2 movie could firmly establish him as a key player in the MCU and make his next appearance more impactful.

Bringing Shang-Chi back into the Marvel Cinematic Universe after a five-year absence would allow for a more substantial story for the character. This is particularly true if he takes on a leadership role within a new team of heroes, potentially even forming the group himself. Given Shang-Chi’s power, derived from wielding the ten rings, him leading a team would be a natural fit.

What Does the Future Hold for Shang-Chi in the MCU?

Honestly, I’ve been really missing Shang-Chi! It felt like forever since we last saw him in the MCU, and he quickly became a favorite of mine. Thankfully, we don’t have to wait much longer – Simu Liu is confirmed to return in March 2025! I’m especially excited because it sounds like Shang-Chi will be teaming up with Sam Wilson’s new Avengers to take on Doctor Doom – played by the fantastic Robert Downey Jr., of course. It’s a lineup I’m really looking forward to seeing!

The trailer for Avengers: Doomsday, shown at CinemaCon, featured a surprising team-up: Shang-Chi battling Gambit (played by Channing Tatum). This crossover was unexpected for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Simu Liu’s appearance in Doomsday hints he’ll play a key role in wrapping up the Multiverse Saga. With a sequel, Shang-Chi 2, potentially being fast-tracked once the director, Destin Daniel Cretton, is available, Shang-Chi could become a major hero in the MCU’s future storylines.

Destin Daniel Cretton is rapidly gaining recognition as a key director at Marvel Studios. Following the success of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, he’s continued working within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He also directed several stars including Tom Holland, Jon Bernthal, and Sadie Sink in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. However, fans are particularly eager to see him team up with Simu Liu again for the upcoming Shang-Chi 2.
