The Hunt for Gollum WON’T be 2 movies, but there is another new Lord of the Rings film in the works
As a long-time devotee of Middle Earth and its enchanting lore, I find myself utterly captivated by the recent developments in the world of The Lord of the Rings. It seems that the magic of this universe refuses to wane, with new stories and adaptations constantly emerging.
It feels like “The Lord of the Rings” is being seen everywhere nowadays. Just recently, Amazon Prime Video completed their grand, costly series titled “The Rings of Power“, and in December, we’re anticipating an animated film called “The War of the Rohirrim“, focusing on the equestrian culture of the Rohan people.
Not only does this mark the beginning, but we’re also excited to share that Andy Serkis, famously known for his role as the tormented creature Gollum in Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings films, is set to star and direct a new movie titled The Hunt for Gollum. According to screenwriter Philippa Boyens, who spoke with Empire, this story, which unfolds after Bilbo’s birthday party and precedes the Mines Of Moria, is an intense, untold tale told from the perspective of this extraordinary character.
In the fictional world created by J.R.R. Tolkien for his epic “The Lord of the Rings,” during this time frame, Aragorn the ranger and Gandalf the wizard join forces in pursuit of Gollum, a key figure connected to the One Ring. This has sparked rumors that Viggo Mortensen and Ian McKellen, who brought these characters to life in the original trilogy, could reprise their roles. Both actors have expressed interest, but with McKellen being 85 years old, it’s suggested they should act quickly on any potential return.
As a dedicated fan, I recall McKellen hinting that “The Hunt for Gollum” was supposedly slated as “two films.” However, Boyens clarified this was merely a misconception. In her words, “Let me set the record straight – it’s not two films! That was an honest confusion arising from the fact that we had started conceptualizing two different live-action films. The first one is indeed ‘The Hunt for Gollum’, and the second one is yet to be officially announced.
Instead of “The Hunt for Gollum” being split into two movies, it’s likely better this way; I recall the attempt to bring “The Hobbit”, a rather brief novel, onto three screens, and I’m not keen on experiencing another lengthy adaptation like that.
It seems that McKellen could be appearing in more Lord of the Rings films since the next ones they’re contemplating would feature Gandalf as well. However, The Hunt for Gollum will be a standalone film. Boyens mentioned that they are exploring various concepts, but many of these ideas do involve Gandalf, suggesting that he may return for two live-action movies.
It’s plausible that they could replace McKellen as Gandalf, despite his disapproval of others taking on the role. As for the plot of a potential second film, it remains uncertain. Gandalf is a character with a rich past; he was once a divine being named Olórin who came to Middle-earth from the far west to counteract Sauron’s power, and there are many adventures that could have occurred between then and his departure for Valinor at the end of the original trilogy. The Amazon series, “The Rings of Power,” has been creating new Gandalf tales, so it’s hard to predict where a new movie might lead.
As we approach the date, “The War of the Rohirrim” is set to release on December 13th. If this one performs well, there’s a possibility of another film in a similar vein being produced. Boyens hinted at a potential second film that would be stunning as an anime, but we’ll have to wait and see if the audience is interested.
