The Greatest World War II Movie Of All Time Is Officially Releasing On Netflix 32 Years Later

Netflix is adding one of the most critically acclaimed World War II films ever made, Schindler’s List, to its streaming library.

War is a complex subject, and many films have explored its effects on both those fighting and civilians caught in the middle. Numerous World War II movies have captured the realities of the conflict, from intimate stories like Downfall and Hacksaw Ridge to epic depictions such as Dunkirk and The Longest Day. However, one film continues to be considered a standout masterpiece in the genre.

Steven Spielberg’s acclaimed film, Schindler’s List, will be available on Netflix starting May 1st. Released in 1993, the movie—starring Liam Neeson, Ben Kingsley, and Ralph Fiennes—tells the true story of Oskar Schindler’s efforts to save more than 1,000 Jewish people during the Holocaust. Widely considered one of the greatest World War II films ever made, it’s praised for both its powerful, personal stories and its broad historical perspective.

The movie came out in December 1993 and received an impressive 12 Academy Award nominations, winning seven, including the top prizes for Best Picture and Best Director. It also won awards for its screenplay, cinematography, editing, music, and art direction – a level of success rarely seen in war films.

This was Spielberg’s initial foray into World War II filmmaking, later followed by Saving Private Ryan. While Saving Private Ryan immersed audiences in the intense action of combat, Schindler’s List focused on the broader impact and consequences of war, and how it affected entire systems.

Both films center on an individual—a soldier in Saving Private Ryan and Oskar Schindler in Schindler’s List—but they tell their stories in different ways. Saving Private Ryan uses shaky, immersive camerawork to put viewers right in the middle of the chaotic D-Day invasion. Schindler’s List, however, is more measured, employing careful cinematography to highlight the complex consequences of war.

The acclaimed film Schindler’s List is coming back to Netflix on May 1st. It’s a significant addition because it isn’t usually available for very long. Netflix often changes its selection of movies and shows, and Schindler’s List was last on the platform for only a few months, from January to May 2025. This return appearance is likely to be temporary as well.
