The Bachelorette: Jenn Tran gasps when ex-boyfriend Matthew shows up mid-season in Auckland, New Zealand
As I read through Jenn’s story, I couldn’t help but feel a pang of empathy for her. Here she was, the first Asian-American lead in The Bachelor franchise, making history and navigating the complicated world of reality TV dating, only to have an unexpected ex-boyfriend show up mid-season. Three years ago they had dated, and while he wasn’t the toxic one she was referring to, they had recently reconnected as friends or so she thought.
On the latest episode of The Bachelorette on ABC, Matthew unexpectedly appeared to shock Jenn Tran in Auckland, New Zealand, on a Monday broadcast.
I, a 26-year-old physician assistant student, was capturing footage on the harbor together with the producers. Suddenly, host Jesse Palmer, 45, made an unexpected announcement: Matthew was joining us.
On the eve of the rose ceremony, Jenn, having attended a group date and followed by two individual dates, was eagerly anticipating the event with the 11 other contenders still in the running.
1. “I honestly didn’t expect to encounter such a group on this trip, a bunch of fellows who make me feel completely at ease and secure in being myself. I am simply thrilled about these men. I can’t imagine how this journey could possibly improve,” Jenn expressed, speaking over footage filmed at the harbor.
Jesse spoke directly to the camera in a hotel lobby to provide viewers with an update.
Jesse explained, ‘Essentially, there’s something going on. A man from Jenn’s past contacted one of our producers. This isn’t usual or anticipated. I hear he’s traveled all the way to New Zealand at his own expense merely to speak with Jenn. His plane is said to have arrived just an hour ago. He’s currently en route to the hotel here.’
Jesse expressed his certainty that “this man is completely worn out” and intended to speak with him at the hotel to discover what he planned to communicate to Jenn.
‘Now, as for Jenn, she is over at the harbor somewhere not far from here. She’s shooting with her producers. It’s what she’d normally be doing right now. And Jenn, of course, has no idea this guy has shown up. And as for the guys, they’re back at their hotel right now, and they’re getting ready for tonight’s rose ceremony,’ Jesse said.
Jesse encountered Matt, who had traveled great distances, and acknowledged being deeply impressed by his actions driven by love.
‘So help me understand how you two know each other,’ Jesse said.
Approximately three years ago, Matt dated Jenn for around four months. Since then, they’ve intermittently been together over the past few years. When she walked away recently, he felt compelled to keep her in his life. Now, Matt is expressing his enduring love for Jenn and his intention to rebuild their trust and explore a potential future together.
1. Jesse informed Matt that Jennifer was nearby, working with producers, and he emphasized the urgency of their chat as the rose ceremony was approaching.
1. As Matt strolled from the hotel to the harbor, a powerful melody echoed. From afar, Jenn was observed sitting solitarily, with Matt gradually coming into view.
She turned and gasped upon seeing him.
‘Oh, my. Oh, my… Sorry, I can’t, I can’t, I can’t,’ Jenn said clearly flustered.
‘Weren’t expecting to see me? Were you expecting someone else?,’ Matt said.
‘How are you here right now? What? What is going on?,’ Jenn said.
1. Matt said, “I had been eagerly anticipating our trip to Colombia together. Unfortunately, I only went for a short while, but it just didn’t feel right without you there. I even missed out on two weddings because of it.”
‘You left the weddings?,’ Jenn interjected.
“Matthew admitted he hadn’t attended any of the weddings. He came straight here from Cartagena, which took him an entire day to travel. Unfortunately, he couldn’t make it without your presence.”
‘Matthew!,’ Jenn said while dancing around. ‘What are you doing?’
At the confessionals, Matthew revealed that he and Jenn had deep feelings for each other and his presence was an expression of his great affection towards her.
Jenn was clearly overwhelmed and confused by his arrival.
Jenn stated, “This is an old boyfriend of mine. I believe his arrival here would be quite surprising. Matt and I dated around three years back. The ex I’m referring to isn’t Matt; he wasn’t the one who caused me any trouble or hurt. That was a different person. Over the past few months, Matt and I have reconnected, though I thought our relationship had been limited to friendship.”
Matthew wanted to join the show mid-season and Jenn despite being shocked seriously considered it.
I can relate to Jenn’s dilemma as I have found myself in similar situations before. The unexpected arrival of a familiar face can be disorienting and disrupt our focus, especially when we are trying to build new relationships. It’s natural to have strong feelings for people we have known for a long time, but introducing them into a new social circle can stir up complex emotions.
1. In the 21st season’s episode, Jennifer was seen having individual outings with Sam McKinney and Devin Strader, as well as participating in a team rugby activity.
At a rugby event, Sam Nejad, aged 25 from Carlsbad, California, built up self-assurance and donned a jersey bearing the label ‘Husband of Jenn’ at its rear.
Later on, he interrupted the chat between Jenn and Thomas Nguyen from Tucker, Georgia, then requested permission to give her a kiss.
I gently turned down Sam N.’s request and explained to him that I wasn’t the best match for him. Then, I escorted him out of the room.
1) “Sam expressed feeling incredibly foolish at the moment, having done some daring actions. He felt as if he was pretending to be a tough action hero like G.I. Joe while wearing a denim jacket, but unfortunately, he failed spectacularly.”
31-year-old Marcus Shoberg from Cloquet, Minnesota was chosen on the group date roses, recognized by Jenn for his openness and vulnerability towards her.
As an obsessed fan, I couldn’t contain my excitement as I watched the sneak peek for the upcoming episode. My heart raced as Jenn revealed, “My ex-boyfriend Matt actually flew across the world to be here. He wants to be a part of this journey. And guess what? He’s here tonight!”
The Bachelorette will return next week on ABC.
Jenn is the first Asian-American in the lead role in the history of The Bachelor franchise.
She previously was a contestant on season 28 of The Bachelor starring Joey Graziadei.
