Taylor Swift finally addresses her most controversial lyric 20 years after the song’s release – and fans are overjoyed to discover its meaning

Taylor Swift recently spoke about a lyric that caused controversy, marking the first time she’s discussed it publicly in two decades. She shared her thoughts in a new interview with The New York Times.

The popular singer, age 36, was named one of the 30 greatest songwriters currently working in America and recently revealed the story behind some of her most famous lyrics, much to the joy of her fans.

In September 2007, Taylor Swift released “Our Song” as her third single. It was also included on her first album, also titled Taylor Swift.

The Grammy-winning artist originally wrote the song for her ninth-grade talent show. Because it was so popular with her classmates, she convinced her record label to include it on her album.

Taylor shared that she wrote the song when she was a freshman in high school, originally performing it at her ninth-grade talent show.

I was trying to come up with a song for the talent show that everyone could connect with, and I wanted it to be cheerful and positive.

I was seeing someone at the time, and we didn’t have ‘our song.’ So, I decided to write one for us and performed it at the year-end talent show.

People continued to approach me months after the song came out, telling me how much they loved ‘Our Song.’ They’d even remember and sing parts of the lyrics, even though they’d only heard it once. That’s when I realized it might actually be something special!

As expected, Taylor was right – “Our Song” continues to be one of her most beloved songs from her early career.

But fans have always wondered about a specific line in her song: “Our song is the slamming screen door / Sneaking out late, tapping on your window / When we’re on the phone, and you talk real slow / ‘Cause it’s late, and your mama don’t know.”

For years, many listeners have pointed out that Taylor Swift should have used the phrase ‘talk real low’ instead of ‘talk real slow’ in her song. ‘Talk real low’ fits the song’s meaning – wanting to avoid being overheard on a late-night phone call – much better than ‘talk real slow’.

Now Taylor has opened up about the controversial lyric and explained her reason why she changed it.

‘I don’t like to have a word end with the same letter that the next word starts with,’ she said.

For instance, in the song ‘Our Song,’ the original lyric was supposed to be ‘When you’re on the phone, and you talk real low.’ But I didn’t like how that sounded, so I changed it to ‘When you talk real slow’ instead.

Taylor Swift has finally addressed a question fans have been asking for two decades, according to posts on X.

It finally makes sense why that lyric is so slow! I never understood it before, and now it all clicks – that’s wild!

I can’t believe she’s still revealing secrets after all this time! It’s amazing to finally have an answer – I’ve never understood any of it before!

I’ve been thinking about this for a really long time, and it finally makes sense! I’ve actually been wondering this forever!

I always assumed he spoke with a southern drawl because many people from the South naturally speak more slowly due to their accents. And honestly, I’m so glad someone finally addressed this – thanks, Taylor!

Taylor was highlighted as one of the 30 best American songwriters currently working, and she discussed how she creates her popular songs.

Taylor Swift revealed she began writing songs at age 12, and even now, the process still feels magical to her.

Taylor also gave fans insight into her older smash hit Love Story during the chat.

The singer shared that she wrote her heartfelt song when she was only 17. She explained, ‘I remember feeling completely confident and unconcerned with what others might think when I wrote ‘Love Story’ in my bedroom at that age – I just loved it so much.’

I’ve been following Taylor for years, and she recently shared the story behind one of her songs – the one with the Romeo and Juliet nods. Apparently, it came from a really relatable place! She was so frustrated with her parents, Andrea and Scott, because they wouldn’t let her go out with a guy they thought was too old for her at the time. It’s funny to hear how even someone as famous as she is deals with typical teenage issues!

She playfully pointed out that this situation highlighted the importance of setting boundaries with children, joking that they might even create hit songs as a result!
