Netflix has begun filming its upcoming movie starring Sydney Sweeney and Noah Centineo. The studio recently announced that production is now underway.
Production on a new Netflix film began on April 20, 2026, in Queensland, Australia. The movie will be directed by Jim Mickle, known for Sweet Tooth and Cold in July, and features an original story set during a long-running space war. Netflix says fans of the franchise and viewers can expect to see actors from shows and films like The White Lotus, Deadpool & Wolverine, and Dune: Part Three.
Netflix Teases Its Upcoming Live-Action Gundam Movie
Now that filming is underway, Netflix has released a sneak peek at the story of its upcoming live-action Gundam movie. According to a description from Tudum, the film follows characters whose changing loyalties and a rising danger lead them into a desperate, galaxy-spanning competition that will determine the future of humankind. Expect stunning battles, powerful emotional moments, and a grand cinematic experience – this Gundam adaptation promises to be unlike anything seen before.
As a huge movie fan, I was really excited to see the latest cast announcement from Tudum! They’ve assembled an incredible group of actors, including Sydney Sweeney and Noah Centineo. I also spotted some familiar faces – Jackson White from Tell Me Lies, Shioli Kutsuna who’s going to be in the new Deadpool & Wolverine, Nonso Anozie from Sweet Tooth, and Michael Mando, who I loved in Better Call Saul. Javon “Wanna” Walton (Under the Bridge), Oleksandr Rudynskyi (The Agency), Ida Brooke (Dune: Part Three), Gemma Chua-Tran (Heartbreak High), and Jason Isaacs are all on board too. They haven’t revealed what parts everyone will be playing yet, but the lineup already has me hooked!
Netflix is releasing a new Gundam series, a collaboration between Legendary Pictures and Bandi Namco Filmworks. Director Mickle will produce the series with Linda Moran through their production company, Nightshade. Cale Boyter, Ali Mendes, Sweeney, Centineo, and Enzo Marc will also be producers. Matthew Jenkins, Makoto Asanuma, and Naohiro Ogata are executive producers on the project.
Gundam’s Live-Action Film Has Been In Development For Nearly a Decade
Netflix has shared exciting news for fans of the popular anime series Gundam. A live-action movie adaptation was initially announced in July 2018, and Sweeney was cast as the main character in March 2025. We can expect more details about the story and other actors as filming progresses in the months ahead.
Originally broadcast in Japan in 1979, Mobile Suit Gundam depicts a war between the Principality of Zeon and the Earth Federation. It launched the popular Gundam franchise, famous for its giant robots—called ‘Mobile Suits’. The series is celebrated for creating the “real robot” genre, moving away from the magical or superhero themes common in anime at the time to focus on more realistic portrayals of war and political conflict.
Sydney Sweeney’s Gundam film does not have a release date at this time.
