Stephen Graham surprisingly lost his Golden Globe award just a day after receiving it for his powerful role in the show Adolescence.
The 52-year-old actor won Best Actor for his portrayal of a father heartbroken and struggling after his 13-year-old son was arrested for a classmate’s murder.
He triumphed over strong competition, including Jason Isaacs and Walton Goggins. His co-stars, Owen Cooper and Erin Doherty, also received awards for their supporting roles, and their powerful Netflix drama won the award for Best Limited Series.
Stephen celebrated his victory with a night of dancing with his wife, Hannah Walters, at the glamorous afterparty. However, he surprisingly misplaced the golden award the very next day.
He revealed the information Monday morning on the Capital Breakfast show with Jordan North, Chris Stark, and Sian Welby, while appearing with his co-star from ‘A Thousand Blows,’ Malachi Kirby.
He had to fly to Madrid immediately after the ceremony. To get there, he rushed to catch a flight from Los Angeles, which had a stopover in Atlanta.
Stephen remembered being in a real rush to make his flight, saying he had about thirty-five minutes and it was incredibly stressful.
When I got off the plane, a woman was waiting with a sign displaying my name. She led me down the stairs, put me in a car, and drove me across the airport – right on the runway!
Jordan was clearly impressed, exclaiming, ‘Wow, that’s really something!’ Sian reacted with surprise, saying, ‘That’s top-tier, isn’t it?’
The actor from ‘Thousand Blows’ admitted with a laugh, ‘It’s crazy! But honestly, I don’t think my appeal will be successful.’
He explained that he told her, “Excuse me, there’s no way you’re putting my suitcase on the plane when I’m stuck in a car now.”
Honestly, it was so frustrating! She kept reassuring me, saying ‘Don’t worry, we’ve got this,’ but I was trying to explain that she didn’t grasp the full situation. She kept repeating her promise, but it just wasn’t sinking in.
As he’d worried, the suitcase didn’t make it, leaving the actor stranded without his clothes, personal items, and, most upsettingly, his treasured trophy in Atlanta.
“What was in the case?” Chris asked. Stephen replied, listing, “My socks, my pants, my toothbrush, and all that…” Then, looking embarrassed, he added, “And a Golden Globe.”
A collective gasp and sympathetic groan filled the studio as a shocked Jordan exclaimed, “You left it!”
Stephen strongly denied responsibility for the incident, explaining, ‘I definitely didn’t leave it behind! I packed it in my suitcase! It’s heavy, so I wouldn’t have carried it in my carry-on.’
Thankfully, the star shared that the problem was quickly fixed – he got his suitcase and award back after just a few days.
He explained that it was found two days later, which made Jordan visibly relieved. She exclaimed, ‘Oh, thank goodness!’
When Stephen accepted his award at the Golden Globes earlier this month, he lovingly thanked Hannah, their two children, and his parents for his recent success.
In addition to starring in the show, the couple also served as co-executive producers of ‘Adolescence.’ Hannah also played the role of Mrs. Bailey, a teacher in the drama.
During his acceptance speech, her husband emotionally shared that marrying her in June 2008 had been life-saving.
Stephen lovingly described his wife as an incredibly talented producer and said he feels very fortunate to be married to her.
He reiterated his gratitude, saying, ‘You saved my life, and I’ll never forget it.’ He also expressed his deep love for his children, Grace and Alfie, telling them he loves them more than anything in the world.
I want to share this award with my mom, and all my wonderful friends and family – you know who you are! I couldn’t have done any of this without your support.
