Star Wars Outlaws – Seven Things You Might Not Know

Star Wars Outlaws - Seven Things You Might Not Know

As a seasoned gamer with countless hours spent exploring the vast universes of science fiction games, I can confidently say that Star Wars Outlaws has piqued my interest like no other title in recent memory. Having grown up watching the original trilogy and expanding my love for the Star Wars lore through the prequels and the current sequel trilogy, the prospect of stepping into the boots of a rogue smuggler in this open-world action RPG is nothing short of exhilarating.

Before the upcoming launch of “Star Wars Outlaws” towards the end of next month, our team had the opportunity to play the game for around four hours to assess Ubisoft Massive’s progress on their open-world space adventure.

Ubisoft hasn’t been shy about showing off its latest foray into the Star Wars universe – the last time was nearly 20 years ago – but many questions remain about gameplay, the size of the open-world maps and so much more.

Don’t worry, fellow enthusiasts! We’ve got you covered as we approach the August 30th release date for Star Wars Outlaws. Here are seven exciting tidbits you might not have known yet!

1 – The Open World is Bigger Than You Think

1) In Star Wars Outlaws, the diverse aspects of its environments are clearly defined. There are urban areas and more linear paths that contain most of the primary missions. Additionally, there are several expansive open-world maps – a total of five: Toshara, Tatooine, Akiva, and two others.

Lately, Creative Director Julian Gerighty was reported as expressing that it would approximately take “four to five minutes without interruption” to move from one end of Toshara to the other, stirring worry among fans regarding the scale of Star Wars Outlaws’ open-world expanses.

As a seasoned gamer who has spent countless hours exploring vast open-world maps, I must say that my recent journey through Toshara in Outlaws has been nothing short of extraordinary. With over two decades of gaming under my belt, I can confidently affirm that Gerighty’s comments about the game’s map size are spot on.

1. Although some may worry about the size of Star Wars Outlaws’ open-world sections, as demonstrated by Toshara, such concerns can be dismissed. In contrast, should you choose to traverse from one end of the map to another, you might manage it before the next Star Wars movie hits theaters, assuming you start on the day Outlaws launches.

Fortunately, you won’t encounter that issue as you can call your speeder by whistling, much like how you summon a horse in Red Dead Redemption 2 when in need. Isn’t that great, friend?

In an open world, there’s a sense of vibrant activity. You’ll find traders camped out, large structures linked to potential quests, or even small communities where you can share your thoughts with anyone who cares to listen. However, the consequences of these interactions for the game’s progression remain to be seen.

2 – Variety is the Spice of Life

In Star Wars Outlaws, you can look forward to an engaging experience with diverse offerings. Whether it’s the missions you choose or the instant action, there’s something for every player. For Outlaws, having a mix of things is key to keeping things interesting.

In terms of its narrative, Star Wars Outlaws features primary missions that align with its objectives, as well as Syndicate quests for additional tasks. Beyond these, there are plenty of pieces of intel to discover and leads to pursue. For instance, we once followed a clue that led us to a hidden Sabacc den, allowing us to engage in some card games.

Intel plays a significant role in the Outlaws world, providing valuable information that can help players uncover hidden treasures, improve their gambling skills, and complete missions. This intel can be obtained through Syndicate quests, personal requests from vendors, or contracts acquired from information brokers. The abundance of tasks ensures that players remain engaged and entertained.

In addition to structured missions, there are also open-ended events taking place, such as the Pirate Raid we experienced. During this event, we trailed an Imperial Shuttle to a pirate hideout and successfully seized their provisions. Consequently, there’s an abundance of diverse activities to engage with.

Without delving into the details of Outlaws’ gameplay yet, let me tell you that its diverse range of activities captivates us greatly. From all-out assaults, stealth missions, aggressive stealth, space combat, high-speed speeder rides, urban exploration, parkour across the galaxy, and more, it’s the game’s effort to blend various playstyles that makes it stand out for us so far.

3 – Syndication Eradication

When discussing Star Wars Outlaws, one captivating aspect is its syndicate system, where the main character, Kay Vess, performs tasks for different factions across various planets – this forms the core of gameplay. The intrigue lies in the fact that it appears challenging to maintain good relations with all syndicates, which increases the potential for conflict. Each action in the game results in both positive and negative outcomes with some syndicates. For example, keeping the Hutts Cartel content while upsetting Crimson Dawn is achievable, but balancing favor from both the Pyke Syndicate and the Hutt Cartel may not be straightforward.

One specific example involved a syndicate mission for the Hutts Cartel called ‘Sabotage’, wherein we were tasked with stealing information from a Pyke stronghold for Jabba’s gang of grifters. Easy, right? However, at the end of said mission, out of nowhere, we were approached by a Sullustan Crimson Dawn member by the name of Monda who offered us a choice: give up the stolen data to them and double cross the Hutts, or face his and the Crimson Dawn’s wrath. So, out of nowhere, in a mission involving the Hutts and the Pykes, the Crimson Dawn gets dragged into the situation. Yes, folks, choice and consequence is rife in Star Wars Outlaws.

Maintaining good relationships with certain syndicates brings benefits beyond just shopping at their stores. You’ll also gain exclusive access to secure zones within cities like Kijimi and Mirogana, making it easier to complete tasks assigned by brokers located in those syndicates’ territories. This leads to improved standing with the assigning syndicate and valuable rewards for your efforts.

As a dedicated fan, I can’t stress enough the importance of cultivating strong relationships with my favorite syndicates, even when not directly involved in their stories. The perks are worth it: exclusive rewards, lucrative contracts, and access to a network of trusted merchants.

4 – Oceans in Heaven

As a dedicated gamer immersed in the Star Wars Outlaws universe, I’ve come to realize that this game is more than just a space adventure; it’s a thrilling heist experience! My characters, Kay and Nix, have landed themselves in some deep trouble and the only way out is by pulling off one last, major score. So, Star Wars Outlaws isn’t just about blasting enemies or flying spaceships, it’s about meticulously planning and executing heists across the galaxy! Gathering a team of associates is crucial for success, and trust me, things are going to get very interesting along the way.

With every new associate you hire for your crew, such as mechanic Selo Rovak, slicer Aila Bren, and bartender Bram, you’ll gain access to permanent bonus perks that will significantly enhance Kay’s space prowess.

As a gamer, I can describe Bram’s skills in this way: Bram equips me with an armored undergarment that boosts my health. He’s got a powerful melee combo for attacking. In tight spots, Bram can feign surrender to buy me some extra time. Plus, he helps me access special requests from merchants. On the other hand, Aila Bren grants me stealthy sneak shots and upgraded concussive smoke grenades for disorienting enemies. She’s got a knack for setting traps on alarms and more.

1. For each recruit, there are six distinct skills or bonuses to acquire. From the ‘Experts’ interface within the game, it appears there are eight different experts to enlist. Hence, there are a total of 48 unique permanent upgrades for Kay that can be unlocked. You can obtain these by carrying out certain in-game activities such as visiting new vendors, locating specific resources, and utilizing particular abilities. Once you fulfill the requirement for a skill, it becomes permanently yours.

You have the freedom to tailor and personalize Kay’s appearance and abilities to a great extent. Additionally, you can acquire new jackets, belts, pants, blaster modifications, and speeder upgrades for her, allowing you to emphasize your preferred gameplay style.

Plus, you can look stylish while doing it. And yes, you can get new skins for Nix, too.

5 – Shoot First, Ask Questions Later

In our early previews and gameplay demos of Star Wars Outlaws, we found that the game heavily emphasized stealth. However, it’s reassuring to know that if you’re not fond of stealth, there are options for you. While there are a few mandatory stealth sequences, which can become repetitive, the overall gameplay is flexible and allows you to play as you prefer.

In the “Relic” mission, Ubisoft Massive’s representative managed to infiltrate the Wellspring on Kijimi undetected, disarmed the alarm, and made off with the Ashiga Clan relic. But during our hands-on session, instead of following the stealthy approach, we charged into the main area and began shooting to see the outcome. Surprisingly, this tactic works if you prefer a more aggressive playstyle. Therefore, for those who aren’t fond of stealth, there’s no need to worry.

In Star Wars Outlaws, it’s not only about hiding or being openly confrontational. The vast majority of scenarios we encountered presented various options for resolution. These alternatives ranged from bribing someone, sneaking through vents to access hidden back doors, or simply walking into an area due to our alliance with the local faction. The possibilities and outcomes from interacting with the syndicates are intricately woven into the gameplay experience.

6 – It’s Not Going to Be a Cakewalk

1. If you’ve watched any Star Wars Outlaws footage, you might find yourself questioning the level of difficulty presented – take for instance the mission ‘False Flag’, where Kay must evade an enormous Imperial space station. In the demonstration, we saw Kay engage in combat with enemies a few at a time, while strategically placed explosive barrels provided ample opportunity for destruction.

1. Venturing into the open world may prove more challenging than expected. With base alarm systems, a galaxy-wide wanted system, and the possibility for the Empire or your adversaries to summon reinforcements indefinitely, it’s important to stay vigilant as a Star Wars Outlaw. The combination of shield guards, blaster-wielding henchmen, and unexpected speeder arrivals can make for some tense moments if you find yourself facing them all at once.

If you assumed Star Wars Outlaw would be an easy win, reconsider that thought. Initially, this poses a chance for you to delve deeper into the game’s RPG aspects. In case you’re finding yourself dying frequently, consider exploring Bram’s abilities to acquire Coarseweave and Ironweave, unlocking Kay’s armored undershirt for protection. For those seeking added speed or the ability to soar on a speeder, Selo Rovak’s skills are the solution. Lastly, when aiming to obtain superior equipment, keep an eye out for those boasting desirable perks.

From my experience as a Star Wars Outlaws fan: In this game, going against the Empire can be quite challenging. A more effective strategy we discovered is employing aggressive stealth. This means creeping into an enemy camp unnoticed, eliminating the guards silently, and cautiously moving through the area, disabling or setting off alarms’ traps as I advance.

1. Once all alarms are silenced, feel free to brandish your blaster and deal with those pesky Imperial or syndicate ruffians. Additionally, you might find discarded A300 Blaster Rifles from the fallen guards, making it easier to handle anyone who crosses your path.

7 – Strike it Wookiee

In addition, don’t miss out on playing some iconic Star Wars minigames and potentially accumulating some credits in Star Wars Outlaws. Scattered throughout Mirogana and Kijimi are opportunities to test your skills at Canto Bight Racing, a mini-game resembling hologram horse racing, as well as Sabacc, the renowned Star Wars card game. Of course, you can also put your earned credits on the line by placing bets.

Instead, in Star Wars Outlaws’ expansive open-world, you’ll stumble upon several data tablets scattered around. Some of these tablets contain valuable information regarding upcoming races, such as a tip for the Canto Fathier event. For instance, one tip might read: “My bookie is confident that the smallest fathier will win this race, and she has never steered me wrong before.”

As someone who has spent countless hours exploring the vast expanse of virtual galaxies, I can confidently say that the best part isn’t just the thrill of gambling, but also the excitement of finding legal ways to game the system and earn free credits! Growing up, I was always told that making a living in space would be a challenge. But with this unexpected discovery, earning credits feels less like a chore and more like an adventure. Who knew that in the farthest reaches of the universe, one could both gamble to their heart’s content and discover creative ways to game the system for freebies? It’s a win-win situation if you ask me!
