Season two of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy will introduce a surprising new alien character – and it will be the show’s last season.
Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, starring Academy Award winner Holly Hunter and Emmy winner Paul Giamatti, launched in January 2026. Despite a strong cast, including established Star Trek actors like Robert Picardo as The Doctor, the show didn’t attract a large audience and was targeted by online hate groups. Paramount+ canceled the series shortly after the first season concluded in March.
At San Diego Comic-Con, Paramount+’s Star Trek panel marked the franchise’s 60th anniversary with some exciting news about Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. Actor Karim Diané announced that Ruaridh Aldington will be joining season two as a main cast member.
Aldington portrays Keats, a young and enigmatic alien the cadets meet during a mission. They bring him back to Starfleet Academy, unaware that he’s a fugitive with a dangerous past.
Ruaridh Aldington is a 28-year-old British actor who has appeared in films like Drained and Dirty Boy, and will soon be in Cary Joji Fukunaga’s (No Time To Die) new movie, Blood on Snow. He’s part of the young cast of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, and this role is set to be his biggest yet, marking his first time working within the popular Star Trek universe.
Aldington’s character, Keats, is an alien with a mysterious past. Like Caleb Mir—a former Starfleet Academy recruit and wanted man played by Sandro Rosta—Keats has a history that sets him apart. He appears to be someone who will cause trouble among the main group of cadets. There’s also a possibility he could develop a romantic connection with Genesis Lythe (Bella Shepard).
While fans are looking forward to the second season of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, there’s disappointment that it will be the last. The season will end before the cadets finish their four-year education, stopping their college story halfway through. Co-showrunner Noga Landau has also revealed the season ends with a cliffhanger, which many feel is especially frustrating given the show’s cancellation.
While Paramount+ hasn’t confirmed a release date for season two of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, many expect it to arrive in early 2027. This season will introduce Ruaridh Aldington as the character Keats.
