FX is known for producing excellent television, including the incredibly popular crime drama The Shield, which ran for seven seasons and still has a dedicated fanbase eager for a prequel. Beyond The Shield, FX has created many successful and critically acclaimed shows like Fargo, American Horror Story, and Archer, with several now considered all-time classics.
FX’s popular series, Sons of Anarchy, was created by Kurt Sutter. While not perfect, the show consistently delivered a strong narrative and allowed its characters to grow throughout its seven seasons. Sons of Anarchy concluded in 2014, and fans are still eager for more stories set in this universe, particularly the planned prequel series.
Despite Multiple Reports & Rumors, A Sons Of Anarchy Prequel Still Hasn’t Happened
The TV show Sons of Anarchy is set in the made-up town of Charming, California, and follows a motorcycle club of the same name. At the start of the series, the club is led by Clay Morrow and Jackson “Jax” Teller. The story kicks off when Jax discovers a document written by his father, one of the club’s founders, outlining his original ideas and plans for its future.
Jax is driven to carry out his father’s goals, but challenges with his own plans, problems within the motorcycle club, conflicts with other groups, and family issues make him doubt his father’s original vision and his own path. Throughout seven seasons, the club, SAMCRO, faces numerous enemies and dangers, and Jax and his brothers experience both triumphs and devastating losses.
Following the conclusion of Sons of Anarchy four years prior, its spin-off, Mayans M.C., ran for five seasons. While a direct continuation of Sons of Anarchy hasn’t materialized, a prequel series has been discussed for years. Back in 2014, creator Kurt Sutter shared plans for a Sons of Anarchy prequel centering on the First 9, initially imagining it as a limited series (according to Nerdcore Movement).
When Kurt Sutter was let go by FX, the chances of a Sons of Anarchy prequel happening dropped significantly (according to Cheat Sheet). The prequel, called The First 9, would have focused on the founding members of the Sons of Anarchy Motorcycle Club, and been set during the Vietnam War era, showing how they first connected and how the idea for SAMCRO originated with JT and Piney.
What A Sons Of Anarchy Prequel Could Be About
The planned prequel to Sons of Anarchy would center on the club’s beginnings, known as the First 9, and show how the founding members came together – including characters only briefly seen in the original series. This prequel would also explore the early relationship between JT and Gemma, and how Gemma eventually became involved with Clay.
If exploring the Vietnam War era feels too complex, a prequel to Sons of Anarchy could focus on the final days of John Teller, revealing the mistakes the club made, how he discovered Gemma and Clay’s affair, and the circumstances surrounding his death. It could also show a young Jax and Opie growing up as members of the SAMCRO family, and how the club shaped their lives from the very beginning.
Why Now Is The Right Time For Sons Of Anarchy To Return
While there aren’t any definite plans yet, a prequel to Sons of Anarchy hasn’t been ruled out. Kurt Sutter recently told Deadline that he’s rebuilt a good relationship with FX and that he still has ideas for stories set in the Sons of Anarchy universe. However, he emphasized that any prequel would only happen when he feels the timing is right.
Despite ending several years ago, Sons of Anarchy remains popular, recently seeing a boost in viewers on streaming platforms. With the spinoff finished, now is the perfect time to revisit the world of SAMCRO. This could be done through the planned First 9 prequel, another prequel story, or even a sequel that continues the original series.
