As Sir David Attenborough approaches his 100th birthday this Friday, May 8th, he’s expressed being deeply touched by all the well wishes he’s received. To celebrate, a special concert will be held in his honor and broadcast from the Royal Albert Hall.
He said, through the BBC, that he’d originally planned to celebrate his 100th birthday with a small, private event, but it appears many people are planning something else.
I’ve received so many wonderful birthday wishes! People of all ages – from young children in preschool to residents at care homes, and so many families and individuals – have reached out, and it’s been truly overwhelming in the best way.

He added that he couldn’t respond to everyone individually, but wanted to express his sincere gratitude for all the thoughtful messages he’d received. He also wished those organizing their own gatherings a wonderful day.
Friday brings a week of celebrations for this beloved national icon to a close. The BBC is showing a combination of classic episodes and brand new programs, and many of his previous works are now available to stream on iPlayer.

The Royal Albert Hall concert will feature appearances by Sir Michael Palin, Steve Backshall, Liz Bonnin, and Chris Packham, and will be hosted by Kirsty Young.
Earlier this year, Jack Bootle, the BBC’s head of factual programming, said it’s hard to fully express how much Sir David Attenborough has contributed.

His television shows revolutionized nature and science broadcasting, and have profoundly impacted how we understand Earth and our role in its ecosystems. This week honors an incredible achievement and a lifetime of work that still fills us with wonder, sparks our curiosity, and encourages us to protect the natural world.
We at the BBC also want to express our gratitude to David – for his kindness, his exceptional talent, and for dedicating his life to sharing the beauty of the natural world with us all.
You can watch ‘David Attenborough’s 100 Years on Planet Earth’ on BBC One and iPlayer starting Friday, May 8th, at 8:30pm.
The latest issue of Living Legends is now available! This special 100-page, full-colour magazine celebrates the life and work of Sir David Attenborough. You can find it at newsstands or order it online.
