Shrinking playerbase and lack of revenue forces Spectre Divide to shut down

Following the debut of Season 1: Flashpoint, it has been announced that Mountaintop Studios will be ceasing operations and Spectre Divide will be discontinued.

I’m deeply saddened to say that my favorite game, Spectre Divide, is about to close its doors in just 30 days from now. It’s heartbreaking to see games with a dedicated fanbase struggle to reach the mainstream audience. This unfortunate reality is all too common these days among niche titles.

The team expressed a touching message to their player community, which included the news that Mountaintop Studios would be shutting down and the cancellation of the first-person shooter game, Spectre Divide, which was centered around the concept of Duality.

Mountaintop Studios and Spectre Divide to shut down after poor Season 1 results

Under Michael “Shroud” Grzesiek as the main gameplay consultant and essentially the prominent figure in early promotions, first-person shooter enthusiasts were eager. They looked forward to experiencing something fresh with an interesting twist. It was a 3vs3 game, where each player managed two characters simultaneously across the battlefield.

Following several rounds of beta testing with numerous players eagerly participating, Spectre Divide suddenly fell quiet. Eventually, a launch date arrived, yet the excitement had waned, along with shroud’s promotional efforts.

The game managed to attain a maximum of slightly more than 26,000 simultaneous players on Steam. Despite this, the team remained optimistic and diligently labored for months to bring about Season 1: Flashpoint. Eventually, it was released on consoles, with significant alterations made such as network enhancements and additional gameplay mechanics.

Initially, the needed backing appeared, only to vanish swiftly afterwards. Consequently, Mountaintop Studios had to permanently close, and Spectre Divide was forced to cease operations. As a devoted admirer, I must share some unfortunate news. Since the PC debut, we’ve been diligently using our remaining resources to keep the game running. Regrettably, we’ve reached the end of our funding line. This means that Mountaintop will be shutting down at week’s end.

In approximately the next month, we anticipate temporarily deactivating Spectre. During this period, we will stop allowing new purchases and provide refunds for all money spent since its initial launch season across our platforms.

During the first week following Season 1’s launch, approximately 400,000 gamers across various platforms started up Spectre Divide. At its peak, there were around 10,000 players online simultaneously. However, these numbers have since decreased, along with any income generated from the player base.

With that, the Spectre Divide project comes to an end. Bravo to the Mountaintop crew for realizing their vision and daring to innovate. Regardless of the final outcome, no one can diminish their achievement.
